Summary: Sam, Dean, and the open stretch of road ahead of them.
There's this strange intimacy, driving with somebody in the seat next to you. Dean's noticed it when he and Sam were alone for long stretches of time, before Sam couldn't (legally) drive (yet), and later when John had gotten a new truck and left Dean the Impala.
Sam in the passenger seat is similar to the road signs and the cars around them. It's the way that Dean can't afford to ignore him: he has to pay attention and anticipate Sam's every breath, every move.
Has to know what he'll say and what tone he'll use.
Dean doesn't acknowledge it, but there has always been this feeling of tension around him, in the air and between Sam and him, an awareness that makes Dean dizzy if he ever stops to think about it.
