Popular Music from Vittula, by Mikael Niemi.

It was a very appropriate selection for this weekend (I was watching W&L, and there was lots of drinking in the book). Very amusing. It's a coming-of-age story about this kid growing up (in the 1960s) in a town in northern Sweden, near the Swedish/ Finnish border--way up north, anyways. There's a part in there where the kid is listening to his sister's record player--and he's listening to ELVIS sing "Jailhouse Rock." (At least I think that was the Elvissong. I must tell Lord Thingy about this book so that he can enjoy it too!)

Uh, did I mention there was lots of drinking?

"99% of the people who turn up [at auditions] are completely and utterly hopeless."
