I have a lot of theories and some serious feelings about lore in EVE.
The first time I saw EVE was when I visited
jkefka over winter break in my senior year. He was faffing around in wormhole space as a bitty new EVE player, and so I saw some Sleeper ships. Said I, "If I played this game, my goal would be to fly those ships." "You can't. They're elaborate drones." "I would fly them anyway." This conversation would be repeated several times. Eventually I started to play EVE. I still want Sleeper ships, but really I just want an avenue to poke the Sleeper storyline with a stick because I have ideas! I have so many ideas! But I don't know what to do short of convoing the CCP dev/actor supervising the RP project and going "I HAVE IDEAS, WHAT DO I DO", because...well...here, have some context:
Way in the
spacefuture, a wormhole opens up between the Milky Way and some unknown galaxy. (Just...suspend all physics disbelief right now.) The Terrans (Earth denizens) start colonizing the galaxy on the far side of the wormhole. At some later point, the wormhole destabilizes, severing all connection to the Milky Way. Most of the colonists die due to lack of supplies from Earth and wars between colonies. Those that survive splinter into five empires, from which various pirate factions and corporations spawn. The empires grow and reinvent their spacefuture technology at various speeds, and go to war with each other and enslave each other and basically there's a lot of infighting, but the status quo is sort of peaceful at the time that the EVE game begins. Players exist as spaceship pilots who are immortal due to cloning and mind-transfer technology. Whenever one body is destroyed, they wake up in another clone of the same.
Very recently (several years after the start of EVE as a game), a series of events opened up access to another galaxy of sorts through natural, unstable wormholes. It was empty of residents save for drones guarding relics of an ancient civilization known as the Sleepers, who appear to have been all about virtual reality. The ancient races are considered contemporary with the Terrans, and probably were originally Terran, but no one knows what happened to them. Some players decided to colonize it and called it wormhole space, or w-space. It later got the official name of Anoikis, but we mostly call it w-space anyway. The original galaxy of EVE is referred to as known space, or k-space. I'm one of those players who lives in w-space. A lot of us w-space residents are really interested in the Sleeper storyline, but we don't know what we can do about it.
There is a lot of weird stuff regarding w-space that is one big mystery. I have some ideas, but there's nothing I can do in-game to verify any of it. Official word of dev creator of w-space/actor supervisor of w-space related RP group is that any plot advancement will be player-driven, but the advancement hinges on discussion. The official RP group for this discussion...well...I read the logs where someone floated a theory past them based heavily in EVE lore and they went insane over "unsubstantiated rumors omg hdu". So I guess I'm stuck. We all kind of are, since most of the w-space residents abandoned the RP group shortly after it formed once it became full of non-w-space people talking about stuff that had no basis in how w-space worked, in our experience.
In theory, there was something players could do to advance the story before the RP group formed, and I've searched through a lot of space for it, but it's nothing that people haven't been able to do since 2009 (when the wormholes opened). There have been a few story events, but nothing has come of them. My corp isn't big on RP, but even we have tried a few things such as using energy transfer to try to power up relics, and using every module we can get our hands on to try to hack into relics.
Basically, there's this giant, fantastical, expansive lore out there, and even though I live in w-space, I don't know how to interact with it.
