The lilacs are blooming.  I can smell them every time I leave my apartment and it makes me remember how beautiful life is.  Mom came to visit me last year at this time in Belgium.  She smuggled a few small branches in her suitcase to remind me of home.  It was one of the most amazing gifts I'd ever gotten ( Read more... )

I think you are a FABULOUS writer, Katharine, and an inspiring, strong, sophisticated, cosmopolitan, modest, aware, loving, confident, hilarious, gorgeous, spiritual woman--and I am so glad to have gotten to know you this past year and a half.

I don't know where you're going next, but I know that through it all--it will be exactly the right thing and right place for you.

p.s. since I am technically a former TA, now you can say at least one U of I "faculty" reached out before your graduation. We don't have to tell anyone that we're friends, too..... ;)

Maybe that was a phenomenon attributed to the large school we attended (isn't past tense a wonderful thing?) for our undergrad. At my first college I actually used to go talk to professors when I was bored. By the time I left there were three professors vieing for me to change my major to theirs - math, writing, and economics.
I guess no one ever told me to move to Illinois and seek out the girl of my dreams (and many other wonderful friends and experiences), I did have to figure that out on my own.
Good job, friend! You did it, all on your own!
