I did some city exploration yesterday. I took the train in around 2.30 so I could spend some time at Old Navy on State and chill out with my own thoughts for a bit before the evening's festivities. I took the El up to Addison and dropped off my things at Pete's before heading to Dan's to meet up with a good portion of my friends from Belgium. I have to admit, I was disappointed in the lack of Sara(h)s but it was a good crowd and we were able to experience a few of our favorites at the Hopleaf. We discussed beer and our favorite memories/horrors of traveling. By 11 I'd found my way back to Pete's to ring in the New Year with friends from school. I toasted to the New Year and felt little awkwardness about not having someone to kiss. I did keep wondering when Harry would show up in his street clothes to tell me he couldn't imagine sharing such a moment with anyone else. But as I looked out of window onto the city he never did come and instead I ended up sharing my first glass of whiskey with a man whose voice streams through my iPod on a weekly basis. Somewhere around 3am I fell asleep. By 8.30 I was on my way out of the city again. I did a lot of walking. I did it all in heals.
Last week while at the mall I heard a young boy ask his mother why the Christmas decorations were still up. She told him it was because of the continuing Christmas sales. My mom and dad tried to take a drive through the neighborhood yesterday to get one last look at the Christmas lights, but discovered that half have been extinguished. It saddens me that with all the hype Christmas is suddenly over to the rest of the world. I believe that people think it funny when they hear me wishing my Catholic friends "Merry Christmas" a week after the fact, but this IS Christmas. December 25th the the first of many days and I cannot help but continue to wish everyone the best throughout the continuing season.
