So, while waiting for Sylvia to finish her shift and walk her home from Southgate Mall, I stood reading the information kiosk on the Southgate Mall expansion.
The first surprising thing was the length of the project. It's projected to be completed by the Summer of 2009. Knowing the economics of the Alberta construction industry it's probably going to cost about as much as a modest ballistic missile defence system.
Furthermore, I was pretty floored by the plans for the new Food Court…well more like 'Food Court of Queen's Bench'…wait, not even that. It's not so much a Food Court as a standing symbol of man outpacing God as realized by steel, concrete, and deep fryer alcoves. It has layers and zones and 'lounge areas'. I keep thinking that the massive structure of this Food Court will be
the MacGuffin in a particularly allegorical anime film where, in the third act, it is destroyed from within as a reminder of the price of hubris.
Interesting tidbit: the word 'mall' comes from 'pall-mall'-an Anglicisation of the Italian pallamaglio-which means 'ball and mallet'
