[written yesterday but scarily had no internet access for over 24 hours! it's a miracle I'm still sane, i mean really...]
Woah, apparently Virgin Trains coffee is all fair trade. Ok, so the the staff torture it until the luke-warm slush in the cardboard cup resembles coffee no more than an orc resembles an elf, but at least they aren’t ripping off the farmers, right?
Should be working, but brain is not awake enough. Therefore a meme is clearly the best way to while away the hours! Thanks to
Helen for this excellent piece of procrastination material.
My iTunes Movie Soundtrack (during which all my musical credibility is flushed down the drain)
Putting iTunes on random, let it select a song for each of the scenes and comment on how well it chooses!
(Total number of songs to pick from: 2864)
OPENING CREDITS:
7 Minutes in Heaven (Atavan Halen) - Fall Out Boy
Recently become popular with the Radio One crowd, and Fall Out Boy really do deserve some recognition. This isn’t one of the standout tracks for me, but listening to the whole album is 43 minutes well spent.
WAKING UP:
Back To Hell - Alkaline Trio
Woah there, an angsty start by iTunes. Life isn’t that bad! The song isn’t as melancholy as the title would imply though. And we like over-driven guitars and frantic drums, yes we do.
FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL:
The End of all Things - Howard Shore
Um... yes. Again, a little more angsty than strictly necessary! This is from the Lord of The Rings Soundtrack, right at the end where Frodo and Sam are stuck on the edge of an exploding volcano and everything is good and bad at the same time. Not relaxing background music, but like the entirely trilogy soundtrack it is a work of genius as you can picture the scene exactly when listening.
FALLING IN LOVE:
Sing for Absolution - Muse
Good old apocalyptic Muse. My favourite band by a mile, this is actually one of their more subtle tracks. Haunting vocals, mosh-worthy guitar solo.
FIGHT SONG:
Black Horse and the Cherry Tree - KT Tunstall
Actually this song would be awesome background music to one of those slap-stick movie-fights.
BREAKING UP:
All This Time - Martyn Joseph
Actually quite an inspired choice from iTunes here. This song has been around for some of the most painful moments of my life.
PROM:
Baggy Trousers - Madness
I wish school had been as anarchic as this song describes! Again, good choice because we had a madness obsession phase during the last few months of school (though Duran Duran’s Rio won as the final-song-of-leavers’-ball).
LIFE IS GOOD:
Starlight - Muse
This is getting close to being my favourite song ever. There is something about that little piano riff that, when blended with the bass and Matt Bellamy’s spine-melting voice that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. i just wanted to hoooold you in my arms...
MENTAL BREAKDOWN:
Count Your Blessings - Aled Jones
Ok, do I skip this and pretend it never happened? Well that wouldn’t be honest would it? Actually very, very appropriate - as much of a grandmother as it makes me, Aled Jones pretty much got me through my Oxford Finals when I came very close to a mental breakdown (4 hours sleep in a week, no food, wild eyed and shaking) and actually despite the fact a lot of my snobbier musical friends hate it, I find his voice very relaxing. He’s a trained treble who never trained as a tenor, and therefore has a very similar voice to my father who used to sing a lot when I was little. Enough justification already - I’m just a soppy loser, ok? ;)
DRIVING:
Fishes On The Line - Lightning Seeds
”No, I didn’t mean what I just said, I meant something else instead!” The rolling rhythm guitar backing makes this a great driving song! In fact... *adds to driving playlist*
FLASHBACK:
Then I Kissed Her - The Beach Boys
Surfer Cheese, oh yes. I do not believe you can listen to the Beach Boys and remain depressed.
GETTING BACK TOGETHER:
The One and Only - Chesney Hawkes
Come on now, iTunes, this is embarrassing, I DO have cool music somewhere! But every 80s child needs a copy of this song. And I’ve seen Chesney live 3 times *watches credibility fly out of the window*
MUSHY INTERLUDE:
Stay - 60 Foot Dolls
”i don’t know what to doooo, cos i’m so in love with yoooou” Upbeat, pseudo-soppiness.
WEDDING:
Devoted - Martyn Layzell
Have spent so many hours on the AV desk listening to Martyn’s raw (unmixed) vocal that I find it quite strange to hear him on a professionally produced cd! We haven’t decided if we’ll ask him to lead at our wedding yet though.
THE NIGHT BEFORE THE WAR:
Alright - Supergrass
“Be aaaaaalright” heehee a good fit for the calm before the storm (everything will be fiiine...)
FINAL BATTLE:
Smile Like You Mean It - The Killers
Always makes me think of The O.C. as The Killers featured in the second series. Now there is some quality spoiled-teen-angst viewing which makes you feel like a thoroughly well-adjusted individual in comparison.
MOMENT OF TRIUMPH:
Street Spirit - The Darkness
*cough* I DO have the original too... just for the record I did not spend any of my hard-earned cash on this. But the guitar solo does make me giggle...
DEATH SCENE:
Piano Concerto No. 2 Adagio Sostenuto - Rachmaninov
Awww voted most romantic piece of music by The Classic.FM hordes. Notable for having been bastardised by Jamie O’Neal in All By Myself (of Bridget Jones fame) but it survives none the less. This would be a quiet, a relatively drawn out death scene during which all the important things are discussed and resolved before the end.
FUNERAL SONG:
Hard to Say I’m Sorry - Chicago
I knew I’d regret ripping the ‘Best of Power Ballads’ triple album. They just don’t make ‘em like they used to. There should be far more mullets in the music business.
END CREDITS:
Everything - Delirious
#It’s a beautiful day and the world is bright, you took me away from the longest night...# It is fitting that delirious should complete my soundtrack as I have followed them avidly since the age of 13 when King of Fools was first released. They have not recorded a bad song yet, and this is a very inspiring one.
All done. Now I still have an hour of train to kill... *plays Starlight again for good measure*
