Okay, item one: the Machine of Death 2 short story has been submitted. Ten minutes before the deadline, but what-the-heck ever, it's my first finished and submitted-for-anything piece of original writing since my BA. It's all good. I can rest happy now ( Read more... )

Ok, now on to the music-ness!

First, thanks for introducing me to Tune-Yards! (Still not bothering with the wonky capitalization, though.) I am all about her crazy/fun style of music. Also: please to have Bird-Brains??? :D

As an ex-smoker, I am all about the secondhand experience. I know it bothers other people, but I just love to stand in the middle of a nice, thick cloud of tobacco smoke and soak it in. (I have very few vices left, so I must resort to getting my fixes vicariously.)

I'm always sad to hear that people I'm desperate to see in person (like Das Racist) aren't as fun as I think they're going to be. :( On the other hand, it does make me feel less bad about missing them in Detroit recently.

I want to see Neko Case! Yes, yes, her voice is amazing. It would be great to attend a proper show.

Animal Collective. And I know some of you are all "urgh, noisy, do not want!"

Why do I get the feeling you're talking to me? :P I'll admit, I'm not a fan of the "random screeching" approach to music-making, but I can be swayed around to just about anything if there's dancing involved. :D

I LOVE WHITE GIRL DANCERS! Ugh, I want video of you dancing NOW! (I'm pretty sure I also fall under the category, but with a healthy dose of 'bounces around like a five year-old who's had too much sugar'.)

Blagh! I zipped Bird-Brains and everything, I'm not sure how I forgot to upload it. I am getting on that right now!

My sinuses are one of the wussiest things in the world and tend to throw tantrums over everything (including humidity and pressure changes), so secondhand smoke for me tends to mean headaches. I would be a terrible smoker. (-:

I think Das Racist would've been a lot more fun in a crowd that actually "got it," rather than a crowd that was at least 1/3 people who didn't have a clue what was going on. (A random guy elbowed me in the middle of one of their songs to go "Where do these guys get their lyrics? They're hilarious! Michael Jackson? A million dollars? Hahaha!" I had no idea how to respond.) A lot of this also has to do with where you end up in the crowd, though--there's a sort of timberline in the crowd (usually marked by a sort o dead zone between people), behind which no one claps and enthusiasm is quietly evaluated by your peers, and in front of which fans become increasingly hardcore and prone to enjoying themselves. I was well outside it for Das Racist, partly because I fled the stage during Curren$y.

The Animal Collective disclaimer is not just for you, actually. There is at least one other person that has expressed to me that they just don't 'get it,' and I suspect there are others. There wasn't a whole lot of screeching last night, though. It was much more focused on the bottom end. It felt quite a bit different from their albums, which I'm pretty sure are mastered differently for headphones listening. It was kind of like Animal Collective: Spaced-Out Party Mix.
