Squee! and bah.

bastille bought a copy of Guitar Hero 80s today, and, as an extra bonus, Best Buy actually had a Wii in stock.
I haven't touched the Wii yet, because I was superexcited about the new GH. Thus far, it has turned out to be fun, but not living up to my high hopes for it. The music varies from decent to excellent, but it is much, much easier than either of the previous two games. The one thing it throws in is lots of three-note chords.
There are thirty songs; I've been playing straight through on Expert, and reached the last set of five before deciding my hand needed a break. I five-starred most of the previous songs the very first time, generally hitting 95% or more of the notes. It took me a second try to finish two of the songs, unlike either of the previous two GHs, where even after playthroughs on Hard, it was still extremely difficult to finish many songs on Expert after multiple attempts.
Contrast the previous games, where I have a reasonable number of songs five-starred on Expert -- but only after a fair amount of practice. And there are a bunch that I am sure that I will never be able to five-star in a reasonable amount of play time.
I'm reasonably certain that I'll finish the game in the next sitting, and that I'll manage to five-star a bunch of the remaining songs on the next play-through, leaving just a handful of songs that will remain challenging. And the fact that the songs are easy on Expert means that it's not going to be interesting to try the game on the easier difficulties, unlike the previous two games, where Hard was still challenging and even getting all five-stars on Medium required some practice.
Also, the thirty songs are it -- no bonus tracks. The graphics are basically almost entirely recycled from Guitar Hero II, so the new songs are effectively all you're getting for your money. The difficulty level further lowers the replay value (although it's possible that for many players, the lower difficulty will mean Expert is entirely accessible, rather than being a potentially insurmountable jump from Hard).
I'm not unhappy to have bought it, but it's definitely something that should be thought of as "getting a few more songs for GH2 at a steep price", rather than as a new game.
