9:53 AM 5/6/2011 · A friend of mine has been going on an odd mental spin for awhile now, though that may not necessarily be attributed to this, and I feel a need to vent a bit. Most notably he's become something of a huge conspiracy buff, initially in minor details but since branching all over the place...
...which I find particularly odd as about a decade or so back he used to balk at people that were so engrossed in the stuff he's currently engrossed in,
Whatta world!
However, as stated up there somewhere, there's this one thing that just struck me as SO odd. It's not even a conspiracy but still.
He doesn't believe oil comes from dinosaurs.
Anybody else find that sorta hit them in the gut?
Apparently the whole concept didn't make sense to him as a kid and he's been decidedly against the notion ever since. Admittedly, he's not alone in this. There's a branch of science, which has been discredited, that follows this line of thought: abiotic theory. Took a foothold around 1641, before bio·organic sciences and organic chemistry existed...which are fields that disproved it. It's based on observed phenomena despite what other firleds of science has to say about this.
His saying this struck me about the same way as when Christine O'Donnell said she doesn't believe in evolution because is animals are still evolving then why can't we see it, as she's said on a number of occasions.
Now, he's certainly allowed to think whatever he thinks. I am in no way denying that. It's just along the same lines as some of his conspiracy stuff that if you don't believe similar, he tends to disparage your comments and claim you're uneducated to some degree. I've pointed this out and he admits he needs to find a better way to express himself on this point, but it still kinda burns.
His main feel as to why the 'dinosaur became oil' line of thought was Big Oil, that they shot down the abiotic theory. Also admittedly, not an exactly alien concept. We'd've has electric cars decades ago if it weren't for them (interesting conspiracy theory about a water car from the 1920's). Still, while they were mentioned in articles I read, it seems to me that they wouldn't be disposed against any oil theory if it helped them find more oil...
...and the dinosaur theory actually has yielded to location great despoits of oil around the world.
The abiotic theory, not as such.
friends,
wtf
