1:31 PM 3/2/10 · Been in an odd sorta funk since the Chinese New Year Parade. Had a blast at that but the day following I felt like I was being held down by lead weights. The day after that I had a pervasive headache that Alleve only brought down to a dull roar. The day after that, which technically ain't over by my standards, I wanted to go out but didn't.
Go figure.
About a week prior to the parade I was hanging out with
niveK when he invited me to this. The day of I was in fairly steady contact with
Anna, texting, as I felt I was running late; weekend trains are only 1 per hour. I lucked out by picking a different station and catching the one I wanted and headed down. I got off at the San Mateo station and was briefly distracted from my goal.
See, about 125 yards or so ahead of me, getting off the same train I was but from the opposite end, I spotted an absolutely gorgeous butt & legs in red checkered pants. The upper ½ was pretty nice too from what I could see, she was facing away from me obviously. I sped up a bit, although a corner of my head was wondering if it might be
Kendra...as I'd crossed paths with her a couple days before, to get a better look.
Sorta start my day with a smile kinda thang.
Guess what?
It was
Kendra.
She nearly laughed her ass off when I told her all that!
Turns out a quality of detail I missed out on from texting
Anna was that while I was worried I would be late, she wasn't even out of bed yet;
Kendra had been talking to her by phone. She and I went for coffee while we waited for them, then all of us hit Royal Donuts in Burlingame. If you don't know it, and you're local, you should. Best pancakes in the fucking world! Tiny lil' place, always packed.
niveK didn't go with us as he was kinda on the low end of the health meter. So it was
Kendra,
Anna (her Mom & sister too),
Kaa, and 1 extra. We went up to the city in a mini·van, caught a mini·bus, and then we were in the middle of Chinatown. It was packed, I felt very much like a sardine, and it was slow going. See,
Anna & Co. largely go to the fair before the parade for all the free stuff. Lots of little knick knacks which held little interest for me, I have way too much stuff already, but the process of starting and stopping and starting and stopping and (you get the idea) topped with the angle of the street...I was very sore from the tighs down.
Normally I can walk for hours with little to no strain but I got all sorts of achy really fast within minutes. I just grinned and bore it.
Anna was worried I wasn't having any fun. I was. I barely go anywhere anymore. The people around me, the various scents and visuals; I was riding a happy wave of constant stimulation. It's possible I didn't look like I was having a blast due to being lost in all the input or that I may be a little odd from the 'cabin fever'. I dunno.
The point is I had a great time. Even when we eventually got to the parade, 3 or so hours later, and it was a lot colder. I had on 2 shirts, a hoodie, and a lengthy leather coat so the only parts of me cold were my legs and hands. I folded in, standing every so often to get circulation going again, to stay warm.
The parade was great. While all of it was doing me good, Gavin Newsom really got me going. His car came by first but he wasn't in it, which was a little confusing at first. Then he came jogging after it a bit later, pullover and jeans and sneakers, smiling and shaking hands.
I was a grinning idiot just from that.
The cold, which was fairly prevailent throughout the day, had me constantly hungry. Whereas heat keeps me from being hungry (or noticing when I am) cold has the logically opposite reaction. We did eat, though not enough to suit my need, and the food was delicious...but it was spaced out quite a bit.
Anyway, good times.
Only real downer was there were people handing out pamplets about how God was going to destroy the planet and soon. Got that covered over at de
End·of·de·World.
