sometimes I scare me

10:59 AM 9/26/07 · Earlier today, or yesterday depending how you look at it, I was on my way into Mollie Stone's when I noticed this kinda shaggy guy sitting off my right. He had a sign, exceptionally direct, that said HUNGRY. I passed him but was already reaching for my left back pocket where I keep loose bills. Didn't really count it out, just grabbed what was there (probably around 4 bucks) and walked back to hand it to him.

Turned back with an exasperrated shrug when he said "Four bucks?" which sounded a tad indignant but when I saw his face I knew better.

It's just how he sounds.

He was quite grateful.

I was on my way to work and I usually swing by there for something in the way of, or for, breakfast. My appetite is an odd thing and the current switch in my work schedule is playing havok with it; tend to only eat once a day. Well, so far as an actual meal.

The rest is broken up into a series of snacks. Mostly liquid but in any event I don't eat anything till a little after noon.

So, I'd already gotten what I was going to have that particular day when I had the sudden impulse to buy something for him. If you're ever of the mind to feed one of de homeless, without consulting them first, you've got to be very select. Nothing canned and chips is usually not the greatest idea...disgestion issues. I'm not one to buy alcohol, virtually ever, but even if I were to it would never be for someone of this type.

As it happens, I didn't find anything that worked for me to give him but he was none the wiser and thanked me profusely as I passed him again on the way to the train. Before I gave up my search I skimmed through an aisle with what is periodically referred to as female products and my eyes lit upon one thing inparticular.

Playtex.

That's what I'd get him. Just what every homeless guy needs! Some good and life affirming Playtex. It's fun...or at least sounds it.

Naturally, I backed slowly out of the aisle and fled.

de homeless, mollie stone's, playtex
