8:55 PM 2/21/07 · Even though I goto the meetings, where everyone spends the year planning out the next event, I don't always feel I make a significant contribution to the process; occasional creatuive spurts notwithstanding. However, while they're planning the convention...
...I'm planning my room.
The first actual meeting of the year I take a look at the place from every conceivable side...and then I goto the front desk and reserve a room. Most places you can't actually reserve a specific room that far in advance but you can get a general reservation. The closer to the event you get the more rights you have in arranging a specific location. This coming convention is in a smaller venue than what
BayCon is used to, which means a lot less rooms, so at least my reservation provides some comfort. I'm still trying to get a feel for the place so to know where I want it most. Since ScreamWorks won't be performing there this year...that's a factor I wasn't anticipating.
Last couple years I've had my room directly above their party.
Not too sure what the rooms look like either, nearly two decades worth of conventions at the San Jose DoubleTree and I've gotten used to their individual room layouts. Still, I'm more concerned about there being sufficient space for my slowly growing little family:
Rachel & her special friendKestral & her special friend
Al
Raven
Corin (maybe)
Nash (unsure)
Kasper (not going at present)
Anna &
niveK (not so much crashing as storing stuff)Some things I know and the rest is kinda up in the air. Tend to get rooms with 2 king size beds, I take the bed closest to the largest window. Last two years
Rachel has had the other bed and shared it with someone; extra roommate the year before and last she brought a boyfriend. She's currently got a boy to have and hold and hug so I'm expecting him to be in there...which would be good as she's more fun when she's got somebody.
On her own she's good too but not as fun. Occasionally amusing to poke with a stick!
Have run into a potential snag on this though. Kestral also has a special friend this year and wants the spare bed. Have kind of mentally resolved to not worry about this until people show up. Last year she camped on the floor (sleeping bags are our friends) with the option to share the bed with
Raven and I.
Al has been something of a regular of the room for awhile and is always welcome. He generally camps on or around the sofa chair and is mysteriously invisible when not concious. I know where he is but can't see him...it's spooky.
Kasper has been of the room the last 2 years and sadly, unless a happy change occurs, will not be there this year. Kind of a pity on a number of fronts, not the least of which is her determined quest to find me someone to have sex with. Even when I've got someone she's convinced she can find someone else...which I don't mind. Although, last year I was under the impression she was trying to sneak the lady I was sleeping with away.
Raven, the new snuggly, is new to my rooming situation as of last year and will be back this one. She's going to be taking a more active role in the convention so I'm not sure how much room time she'll be having but is, so far as I know, going to be sharing blankets with me. Not a big deal, most of my roomies are generally working the convention to one extent or another even though my room is not a staff room by any extent.
It's not unusual that I pick up strays during the convention, people that go but make no plans where to stay or decide to switch from where they were originally. Last year
Kasper brought in this guy
Nash early on and he was pretty cool. He's expressed an interest in being in my room again but I'm kinda cautious as he creeped out two of the women in my room; didn't find out till after the event. I've been known to creep folks out from time to time so I can sympathize with this, he honestly isn't sure what he did and was surprised when I told him, so we're still chatting around it. I'm thinking of letting him in but at the first sign of trouble he's out.
Truth to tell, he kinda creeped me a bit too.
Corin used to goto
BayCon years ago and as she's back in the area again, more or less, I've asked her to go. At first she refused, about a month later she said maybe, and now I've just told her to accept she's going. As to where she'll sleep...in lieu of the bathtub (best alarm system in the world) I'm figuring in the bed with
Raven and I. Not talking sex or anything like that, though obviously not opposed, but there's a lotta comfort in friendly cuddles. Haven't discussed this with
Raven yet (only came up with this earlier today) but I think she and
Corin would really hit it off after meeting; they both like me so clearly they're equally screwed in the head.
Normally they have their own room for stuff but seeing as they literally live 5 minutes away from the present location,
Anna &
niveK have decided not to spend the weekend at the convention. Commuting aside, they have expressed an interest to store stuff in the room, outfits and the like, with the added benefit of having a place to bathe and change clothes.
These are just the broad strokes really...I think about this stuff a lot when I'm bored or waiting for things.
