Likely as a security measure against spammers, quite a few of the remaining folks here on LJ use captcha as a requirement to leave comments on their posts. It's a little frustrating, as I don't tend to see it until after I hit reply... and then I gotta deal with it.
The one time I complained about it to a friend who was using it... he made a big ol' stink about it.
Have a adopted a grin & bear it philosophy... which may have a voodoo doll aspect.
I've had few issues with spammers as LJ has a block function.
