Starting October 27th, I will have my very own apartment! Well, that's the day I sign the lease, anyway. I'll probably end up paying Jonathan 1/2 a month's rent for November or something because I'm fairly unprepared to physically move all my things. Whoever heard of manager's renting apartments that aren't even ready to go? When I got my place in Los Feliz in 2004, it seemed the norm to advertise a vacancy and have the new tenant occupy it the following month. All of the places I viewed back then were empty, spotless and ready to go; this time around, they're still being cleaned, painted, retiled, and the day it's over, you can move in. So wow, I have some serious packing to do, and in a hurry. It does not help that I am fighting off a cold.
The new place is in Van Nuys on Hazeltine a few blocks south of the Orange Line, in a mostly residential neighborhood filled with big, shady trees. There's an immaculate pool, I get my own parking spot, and while there are no longer pets around, at least one resident has a big, friendly black cat that I played with over the weekend. It's pretty big, with the complex built around a lovely landscaped courtyard, and when I stand in the middle of the living room, there are roses and camelias and a small tree hung with hummingbird feeders.
I've never lived on my own and I'm a little afraid.. mostly because I'm nervous about getting lonely, and I have very little, so I'm scared I'll be depressed by the bareness of my future home. At the same time, it will be my space, my rules, my things, my responsibility. I'm also going to have to budget myself a bit, and will definitely keep track of my expenses a lot tighter. Amazing how I'm making so much more than I used to but it onlygoes half as much, even when I buy little other than food and occasional entertainment.
In the mean time, if you're interested in a room in Reseda for $525, contact
lifeofreilly . The whole house has hardwood floors, there is a backyard with fire pit and hot tub (I shall miss the hot tub), driveway parking, a shared full bathroom, fast internet, a big TV with cable and DVR, and 1/3 share of utilities. I like the neighborhood and I will miss taking my evening walks there, as well as being able to sleep with the windows open and waking up to birds and squirrels. It's only a block from two major streets but it is very quiet.
