Tales from L.A.

Oct 12, 2007 00:57

The last few days have been good. Life has involved a lot of running around, such as navigating Little Tokyo under construction to interview for a gig with Lip Service, and today's straight shot from an interview for a salaried position with a company in the aerospace industry in Rancho Cucamonga, all the way to Santa Monica for volunteer training. That's going really well, by the way. I love learning, I love watching the fish swim around and getting to know about them. For example, all sheepheads are born female and change genders based on the needs of the population! The marine biologists all love their jobs and encourage me to pursue it since I've got an interest. Today Bri and I talked about research diving, and Tara C. turned me onto an organization that needs rescue certified divers to collect data on kept, and to relocate the red urchins that feed on said kelp. Awesome! I know it's premature, but I am really excited by even the prospect of a scientific career, and it makes the thought of working in an office tolerable. The thought of spending the rest of my life sitting in an office doing design is pretty bleak, but if I have an alternate goal in mind that it is funding, it's tolerable. I'm finding it nice to be doing things, associating with people, feeling like I am making progress. Going to bed so tired is actually delightful, instead of taking valerian to doze off.

I showed up early at the aquarium and a few other volunteers were already there. Scott gave us all gift certificates for a place called the Hideout, which turned out to be a neat little bar tucked into a side street right off PCH. I'd been hanging out with Jeremy beforehand and he said I should come back for drinks, so I picked him up and to the Hideout we went! Grabbed a pint of Guinness, and there were FREE TACOS being cooked up on the patio, which is was just perfect to go with the appetite drinking produces in me.

I have this personification of L.A. as a strange old woman who was once someone in the entertainment industry, with badly dyed hair and several small yappy dogs. Today, I didn't hate her, and when I drove by downtown in the fog, I smiled and grudgingly gave in and acknowledged her. I hate her most days, but with the Lebowski Fest going on this weekend complete with costumed bowling tournament (which I will not be going to because Adam is taking me out to Calico Ghost Town tomorrow for the Unimog Fest), and a live portrayal of "Point Break" (yes, the surfer movie with Keanu Reeves), I must love her.

I'll probably be at L.A. Decom on Saturday. Gimme a holler if you're there. Sunday is a rest day, and a day to review prepress knowledge for another interview on Monday.
