I may be probably am kidding myself if I think I can work in graphic design again. If I couldn't do it sitting in a treehouse overlooking the Caribbean Sea and rainforest because I just didn't care what fucking font the title was in, I may not be able to do it anywhere. Browsing the job descriptions has led to much apathy and disinterest. Working with marketing team, answering to creative director, PowerPoint experience preferred.
Then I see this:
A personal interest or passion for consumer products is a strong plus.
And my soul clenches.
I've learned something about myself on my travels. I'd rather work in the mail room of Reef Check California, or at the counter or a dive shop, than making products look good so people will buy them. I don't want to contribute to an overly materialistic culture, nor do I want to have to fake passion for whatever company I might be interviewing for. There's no way I can pull off caring for clothing for which I might design hangtags, toys for which I might design packaging, or health care for which I might design brochures. I simple DO NOT CARE.
Things I do care about are preserving the environment and improving quality of life for people. If you have any suggestions on that, or know of any jobs in these areas, please let me know. I've found a few cool organizations around L.A. in these fields, but they want volunteers rather than staff.
