All she saw was Anthony rush in from the ladder to help before the darkness that was hiding in the corners of her eyes filled her mind and she drifted off.
Striking cold was all Dareli could feel when she woke up, covered in an icy sweat and breathing deeply. It felt like a huge weight has been lifted from her chest and finally let her breath after three years of cold pressure. Opening her eyes, it seemed like she was seeing everything through a mist, turning her head to survey her own room which she remembered so vividly. It was exactly the same, no cobwebs in the corners so apparently someone was taking care of it. Any muscle movement was out of the question, her body numb from three years of being locked in a stone prison. She could see the many blankets covering every inch of her, but barely felt the warmth, the cold of the rock engraved in her skin. Dareli took one last glance around the room before fading into sleep once again.
When she woke up for the third time, she finally felt the sweet salvation of warmth. Cold sweat still rimmed her forehead, but the heat of the blankets warmed her skin. Dareli opened her eyes and took a familiar look around the room, smiling at the new things she saw. Streams, posters, and random pictures were covering every spot of her room, each welcoming her back and saying how much they had missed her. Who ‘they’ were Dareli wasn’t sure, but the kindness they showed warmed her heart.
Shifting slightly, Dareli noticed for the first time that someone was holding her hand. Sitting up slowly, she looked down and saw Daniel sleeping in a very awkward position on half of her bed. He was sitting on the edge of a chair, his legs sprawled out to the side and his side on the bed, one arm draped over her legs lazily and the other holding her hand gently. Dareli couldn’t help but laugh at him, slightly disgusted by the small trail of drool seeping into her bed sheet.
Dareli rolled her eyes and kicked her right leg slightly; Daniel’s immediately jolting up and spinning in circles, looking for an invisible attacker. Dareli just stared up in amused awe as Daniel came to his senses and stood still, breathing heavily. His finally looked down at Dareli, who just smiled and shook her head. A cheerful grin spread across Daniel’s face as he wrapped his arms around Dareli, who smiled just as wide and hugged him back, surprised at how much he filled out from the past three years.
“Holy hell you’re awake, I’m so glad your back Dareli.” Daniel whispered into her ear, refusing to let go as Dareli slowly ran out of breath.
“Thanks Daniel, I missed you too.” Dareli said in a painful wheeze as Daniel finally let go.
“Sorry, just a little excited your back.” Daniel quietly said, blushing and looking down in guilt. Dareli just smiled and grabbed his hand, giving him a reassuring squeeze that put the same smile as before back on his face.
“I know, I am too. I would have broken you in half if I had enough strength. How is everybody?”
“They’re fine. Kind of funny you should ask.”
“Why is that?”
“Well…you were guardian, you were watching us. Shouldn’t know you know how we have been?”
It was the first time Dareli realized that she couldn’t remember a thing of the past three years. All she could remember was the last few days before turning to stone, then everything was dark until now.
“I can’t remember…That’s odd.”
“I guess it’s good.” Daniel spoke with a bit of guilt in his voice, apparently not wanting to tell Dareli something, though she heard the quiver of guilt and was curious.
“Why do you say that?”
“So I guess you don’t know about Dylan…”
