WINNER OF NATIONAL HERITAGE FELLOWSHIP TO TEACH CLASS IN NATICK:

Mestre Jelon, a Nationally Recognized Capoeira Master and Promoter of Brazilian Performance Art Offers a Workshop

At 2:00 p.m. on September 27, 2008, Capoeira Luanda will host Mestre Jelon Vieira. Vieira will conduct a capoeira workshop at Broadway Bound Dance Studio, 17 Willow St, Natick, MA. Walk-in students are welcome, no capoeira experience necessary. Promotional flyers and coupons are available at the event for those interested in future classes and events.

Capoeira is a Brazilian Martial Art that combines dance, music, and fighting skills. Capoeira was developed secretly by African slaves on Brazilian plantations, with practitioners pretending to dance, when in fact they were training attacks and evasions. Thus, there is also a whole style of capoeira music which goes along with the martial arts culture.

Mestre Jelon is a well known martial artist, one of the first Brazilian Capoeira Masters to bring the art to the United States. In 2000, Vieira was recognized by the Brazilian Cultural Center in New York City for being the "Pioneer of Capoeira in the United States." Last week in Washington D.C., the National Endowment for the Arts honored Vieira with a 2008 National Heritage Fellowship, the highest national honor in the folk arts. Since his arrival in the United States in the 1970s, Vieira has been at the forefront of promoting and presenting traditional capoeira through performing, teaching, and providing a wealth of knowledge and expertise on Brazilian culture to scholars and historians. In 1977, he founded DanceBrazil, a professional company of contemporary and traditional dancers and musicians that has performed throughout the U.S. and abroad. Vieira also founded the Capoeira Foundation in the 1980s to promote Afro-Brazilian cultural forms, particularly dance and music.

When asked what capoeira was for him, Mestre Jelon replied, "Capoeira is what I am. It is my life philosophy. Through the art of Capoeira I have learned about life and freedom. Because of Capoeira I stay in contact with my ancestors and my culture. It keeps my body and mind healthy and gives me a strong connection with my spirit so that I am able to enjoy every moment of what Life has to offer me. Capoeira has given me such tremendous respect for Life and has kept me focused in my journey to be a better human being."

Capoeira Luanda is a not-for-profit organization that was founded in order to spread and promote the art of Capoeira and all aspects of the Afro-Brazilian Culture throughout the world. Under the supervision of Mestre Jelon, Instructor Morcego provides regular capoeira classes for all level of students in Natick and Needham, MA. The local group’s website is www. masscapoeira. com.
