I need to rant about something that bothers me a bit:
Bullying. Or, more specifically, the media interpretation of bullying versus the actual bullying I recall from high school.
The media would have us believe that the biggest bullies are the big jocks and the victims range from the little, nerdy guys, to the gay, or perceived gay, guys.
My actual experience was that the biggest bullies were the girls. The bullying was rarely physical, but was much more scarring. It was also allowed to continue because the administration could not stop it. It was rumors, shunning, name-calling. It was attacks about appearance, social status, relationships, family status, income. Girls bullied in groups both large and small. They were also from every social level and clique.
Why is this an issue that is not commonly addressed on television? The media has started running stories about cyberbullying, but that is just taking what my generation and those before me experienced and putting it online. Sure, websites can crack down on cyberbullying, but if they think that will end it, they are delusional. It would just mean that those girls would have to return to the old way of doing this. Their bullying is done out of boredom, out of a need for drama, because they don't like someone. They are self-centered, and do not care about how their actions affect others. It's not for the reasons that television tells us it is. Generally, they just want to start shit. So, maybe someone can find a way to stop these girls, then bullying would really stop on school campuses.
