Executives killed the Radio Star

I post here today to mourn the loss of traditional radio. Up until two days ago, there was a local station that I listed to with some frequency. They played a nice mix of rock/alternative. Mostly current, but they'd throw in a bunch of stuff from the 80's and 90's - like The Smiths. The DJ's usually had some entertaining or witty banter and altogether, it was just good to listen to. With a fair degree of certainty, I could tune to 106.3 and sure enough, there would be something that I liked.

But not anymore.

During the middle of the day on Monday, and without any warning, they pulled a format change. On the way to work it was the normal station, but on the way home, I heard Pink. And then Beyonce. I thought it was the wrong station or perhaps some joke, but the pop crap just kept coming. When I got home, I pulled up their website and it was gone! Replaced by some horrible image collage with a giant Justin Timberlake smiling back at me in the middle of the page. The banner at the top announced, 'The New 106.3 - Jersey's top hits station' So great, yet another top 40 p.o.s. station to flood the airwaves to add to the 10 or so that we already have.

What burns me the most is that there was no hint of it coming. It's like selling a product that you know has a following, and then just ceasing to produce it. And on top of that, advertisers who paid for airtime to hit a certain demographic just got screwed.

So good going executive jerk who decided to switch formats on me - you just killed my radio.
