So I started a donut tour in Portland and have continued it, and thought about starting a donut/travel blog. So here are my notes so far:
Portland, Voodoo Donuts:
Very touristy and novelty driven, donuts between $1-$6. Specials on Thursday with local fillings (Kelly's Jelly). Outdoor seating.
I had a maple donut filled with the cream from Boston Cream (I should learn the name for this before it becomes an official blog). There was a small mustache drawn on it in white icing. The donut was larger than a DD donut (my measuring tape for all donuts since DD is so wide spread).
I would rate the donut a 5/5 (I should come up with some cute measuring scale...) It was a good misture between lightness and filling. All parts tasted great. The size was more than I could eat in one donut sitting.
Portland (possibly Beaverton?) Seasame Donuts:
Hilarious owner/worker inside. Offered us shots. Half dozen for $5.50. This location also had a Baskin Robbins in it. Outdoor seating.
I had what was called a Portland Creme (maple frosting, BC filling) and a pumpkin spice. The Portland Creme was good, not as decadent tasting as the Voodoo Donut one, but definitely worth going back for. The pumpkin spice was a cake donut but had little to no pumpkin taste. As a cake donut it was ok, as a pumpkin donut it would get a 1/5 simply for lack of taste.
I tried a bite of a French Crueler which was Elaine and Madeline's favorite. Very eggy, reminded me of challah bread. The glaze was nice, I would give it a 3/5. Possibly a good donut for people who do not like heave DD donuts.
I also tried a bite of the blueberry cake donut Madeline got. 4/5. Very flavorful and moist, which I feel DD has a hard time getting in their cake donuts. The blueberry flavoring was strong and possibly a little artificial tasting, I probably would not have been able to eat an entire one.
Portland, some place downtown I forgot the name of already...I'll have to ask Elaine:
Stylish decor, definitely a trendy donut place.
I had the maple cake donut and it was my least favorite of the Portland donuts. It was small and dense, and the maple flavoring was more authentic. 3/5. Elaine got a lavender cake donut and I don't remember what Madeline got. No public restroom, no seating.
San Francisco, Pepples Donuts:
Located in the Ferry Building, selling organic donuts. Maria also insisted they were vegan, but the sign didn't indicate that. Unique combinations and flavors, not your run of the mill donut place. I got a coffee cake donut and I couldn't even finish it. 0/5. Dry cake donut, weird aftertaste in the frosting. It was $3 with tip and not worth it.
San Francisco, Some place that started with a B...Maria's got a picture:
This was a temporary table set up in the Ferry Building with a limited menu of authentic Italian pastries. Also $3 with tip.
Maria got a chocolate filled raised donut and it was very good. It had cinnamon and sugar sprinkles on the outside and light and fluffy chocolate filling on the inside. 4/5.
San Francisco, Trish's Donuts:
Located on Pier 39 they served miniature donuts by the bag or bucket.
6 donuts for $3 I believe. I need to be better about pricing and taking notes.
The donuts were served warm with a fresh sugar sprinkling on the bag. They were very good, about two bites each and just almost melted in your mouth. The donuts at the bottom of the bag ended up covered in sugar to the point that you had to dust some of it off. 4/5, mostly for the fact that they were served warm.
San Francisco, Bob's Donuts:
Old fashioned donut place with a huge selection, including a 9" novelty donut ($5.95). $0.85 per standard donut.
I got a maple cake donut and Maria got a chocolate frosted raised donut and coffee. She said the coffee was awful. Both donuts were very good, I think I liked the raised donut better. Very fluffy. I took notes of the donuts somewhere, so I'll have to dig that out for more.
San Francisco, Donuts & Things:
More of a cafe that also had a donut case. $0.90 for one donut.
Got a maple raised for later, when I squished it completely in my bag. It was still fairly good, very basic donut and what you would think of as a donut. The maple was the more artificial flavoring that I like and the donut had a nice flavor too it, not sure how it would have been better if I had not squished it so badly. 3.5/5
My donut tour had a day off yesterday, I don't want to get sick of donuts! I may continue it tonight in Carlsbad, there is a donut place next to the train station but I wasn't sure of my time this morning and didn't stop yet. I also have some pictures to ad to my blog, and I guess I better try to maybe rotate between donut reviews and general traveling tips. Also, I can review donut places in Boston, Florida, and Nebraska to ad to the completeness of it! :-) I would also take in user submitted reviews of their local favorites. Maybe have a map feature? Is it ridiculous how excited I am about the prospect of starting this??? :-D
