Your's truely entered into the World Skills Refional Floristry competition yesterday in Gardening Australia (garden show) and let me give you a little run down of it.
Had to make 5 designs within a certain amount of time all infront of a live audience (as opposed to a dead one I guess). And they were looking at me! >_< Just my luck too, I drew the short straw and got the front table and the tables themselves were way way too short for me so I got a sore neck. Anyway we started at 8:30am and after each design got a 15 min break.
The judges judged throughout the competition poking through our stuff as we made it, very unnerving, not to mention little old stickybeek ladies walking up to me trying to ask questions while I'm working. Once a design was finished and marked they were taken over to another area and put on display, so when I completed my wreath they asked me to take it there and some offical guy told me to reach over the table and put it on the stand which I did with great difficulty because it was full of water and really heavy but as I stepped back it was too heavy and fell off the stand and hit the floor with a big thud....it broke :( I was very dissapointed, mainly cause I didn't even get a photo of it before it commited suicide.
Had more designs to do though, didn't have time to mourn it.
Well I'll skip over the other stuff, we finished at about 4:30pm then had a ceremony and quite honestly I didn't think I would get a medal or cared too much if I didn't. There were 6 competitors and of course read out the bronze first....not me, didn't know the girl. Then came silver and they called my name! I was like holy crap I got silver :D! Woohoo! Went up and got my shiney silver medal, uber cool I love silver, and I turn around to get a photo while on the stage and I see the head teacher from my tafe school on the phone hopping around in her seat and I knew she was talking to my class teacher, she was so excited, was funny.
There turned out to be a tie for first and both of the people were from my tafe school as well (yay us!) I was really happy for the girl who won, but I didn't think the guy's work was worth the marks. If I did some of the stuff he did for an assessment I would not have passed because it was not really correctly made, regardless it's cool all our students won the top 3 places.
Ok without going into great detail the winner (not the girl, she was over the age limit) is going on to the nationals in melbourne in may 2006 but he will be over the age limit should he win that competition he wont be able to go to the finals in Japan in November 2007 so they would like to put me into the nationals as well, if I want to. But I'm scared cause they will be way better than me and I don't want to make an idiot of myself. So what should I do? I'm not sure if they pay for my trip though, maybe not and I don't think they is a real prize, just recognition I guess.....
*enter the dilema*
