Week 2
Katrina happened last week and now the city of New Orleans has been destroyed. A lot of madness insued.
It all began late last weekend. The national hurricane center had issued a hurricane approaching the south east corner of Florida. It swept over Miami and was expected to take a sharp northern turn. Instead the hurricane gained force and went out over the gulf of mexico and grew into a category 5 hurricane with winds topping 175 mph. For 3 days the forecasters predicted and warned people that the eye would hit New Orleans. The city began to evacuate. many fled to the north and escaped but many thousands stayed behind to whether the storm. They made a grave mistake. On monday the storm blew onto land and tore thru the southeast coastline from louisiana to western Florida. It came in with full force and flooded the coastline leaving it in ruin. The people who were unable to flee were forced to live in the superdome but the roof began to leak thru and caused a lot of panic. People began to go crazy rain and wind were tearring thru the region. The devestation was huge. For miles and miles the coastline was destroyed. The city of New Orleans was considered a disaster area. In Mississippi several cities were mearly whiped off the map. Water is up to the rooftops of the buildings flooding the cities. many people are dieing and dead left for the dead. thousands more will be found when the water resides. In the meantime there was no help. No disaster relief and it took 3 days for the emergency agencies to arrive. The disaster was not one anyone had prepared for. There was race accusations, the photos on the tv showed lower class black people and the images became a racial issues. Hatred bled and chaos insued. Looters stormed the city and broke into shops and stores and taking items, food, stereos and jewelry. There were not enough police to handle to disaster and the city became a city under Martial Law. Finally on the 4 th day the cavarly came rolling into town. The National Gaurd rolled in and took over. 2 naval war ships the USS Bataan and the USS Iwo Jima came in to assist and rescue. The USS Harry Truman also was sent to assist the region. The army arrived the entire military was called in. the city was evacuating the people and sent them to nearby states to be adopted. Thousands of families were displaced it was horrible. I wanted to go help so bad it would have been cool. But my ship is stuck in the yards and not going anywhere.
