You probably shouldn't read this entry hungry

Oh man, this was such a day of food. First, my housemate Emily and I went to the farmers' market, where I got potatoes, tiny baby zucchini, sweet onions and a delicious strawberry cream cheese pastry of some sort. Also a "cidersicle," which was pretty much frozen cider in a tube. Tasty. So from the farmers' market, we picked up Avery, Heidi and Heidi's friend from home who was visiting to go strawberry and raspberry picking. We went for raspberries first (all at the same farm but at two different parts), but it was the first day of the season and there weren't all that many. We decided we will be going back next weekend for crazy raspberry goodness since it is clear those bushes are ready to explode pretty damn soon. Anyway, when we went for strawberries? Oh my goodness. It was AMAZING. There were so many. SO MANY. There are currently about 10 lbs of strawberries in my fridge and a pint of raspberries and it all cost $18. I LOVE SUMMER AND ALSO FARMS. On the way back, we came across a farmstand with fresh sweet corn at 50 cents an ear. Dude, what can you buy with 50 cents? Like nothing, except apparently corn!

When we finally made it back to Heidi and Avery's house, we decided to make fresh pasta. Now, usually when I make fresh pasta, I have a food processor and a pasta maker. This time, I was prepared to have neither, although their house turned out to have a pasta maker. (Their house has pretty much everything you would ever need, except a food processor.) We tried to make the dough in the blender, which was a massive failure and resulted in us overkneading the dough some when we did it by hand. We also made a crazy delicious sauce like so:

1) Sauté sweet onions and garlic in olive oil
2) Add canned crushed tomatoes
3) Puree zucchini, onion greens and a hot chili and add to the pot
4) Slice some strawberries and throw them in there
5) Season with fresh basil and cilantro (their house also has an amazing garden)

After putting the pasta dough in the fridge and leaving the sauce to simmer, I walked home where I found Emily and Kate, sitting somewhat guiltily in the ruins of their incredibly processed meal. They decided they needed to get away from the ridiculously fresh foods lifestyle we tend to lead, so they went to my and Emily's house to eat hot dogs and animal cookies and Hostess donuts and Ritz Bits. So of course I ate some animal cookies. Animal cookies are damn tasty. I sat for about an hour in my house and then went back to the house with the food. Our dinner ended up including the fresh pasta (a little tougher than I would have liked but we plan to experiment more) with the sauce, roasted corn, a homemade pizza, sweet potato fries, salad, strawberries and mufookies, which are an excellent food Heidi and her friend made up where you make cookies in mini-muffin tins. There were about ten of us and all the food is gone. Then, in pretty much the only non-food related part of my day, we took a walk to the river. Now I am going to sleep so I can wake up and make pancakes. Life is good.
