Did anyone watch the MTV Video Music Awards? Man, did they suck. I mean, they usually aren't that great anyway, but this year was really bad. Did we really need another Notorious B.I.G. tribute? (Maybe this year at the Oscars they'll spend five minutes memorializing River Phoenix.) And please don't take this the wrong way folks, but were there any white people there? MTV gets a lot of flak for prioritizing rap and hip-hop over all other genres, and that night they earned it. Sheesh. There were a few things I enjoyed, though:
1. The Killers. Duh. I'm such a dork; I love them. Especially Brandon Flowers. So sue me. I just hate that the only award they won was the one I didn't want them to win, Best New Artist, a.k.a. Kiss of Death. Now they can follow the illustrious career paths of previous Best New Artists Michael Penn, Natalie Imbruglia, a-ha, and Crowded House. (Ok, granted, Nirvana, Guns n' Roses, Eminem, and Alicia Keys have all won it, too, but there's definitely a pattern. Even more so w/ the Grammy for Best New Artist - Hopefully, since Maroon 5 won that category from BOTH award shows last year, they'll never be heard from again.)
2. My Chemical Romance. I didn't like them at first, but they're growing on me.
3. Lil' Kim. She wore clothes!
4. Green Day. They pretty much swept the awards. I love that album; it reminds me of The Clash. And has anyone else noticed how fucking sexy Billie Joe Armstrong is looking these Days?
5. Kanye West. So glad he won. Also glad he spoke out about the racist undertones of the whole New Orleans-Katrina situation (even though I don't think the telethon was the right place to do it)
And special honorable mention goes to: Hilary Duff's new teeth. So hideous it's funny.
