Last Friday we met up with Lane & Becky to go eat dinner & see Stardust. The movie was really really good, then afterwards we went to the bookstore. I must have still been in the mood for fantasy, and when we walked in there was a display of vampire books right up front. Once caught my eye, Eclipse. I took a closer look & realized it was part 3 of a series, so bought part 1 instead.
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.
It's a 500 page book & I read it in 2 days. Admittedly, it's a fast read, with large print, but I haven't made the time to read that much in YEARS. As soon as I finished it I had to go out & buy the sequel, New Moon. I knew I would want the third one too, but Mikey talked me out of spending ANOTHER $18, so I decided to order it online instead.
I finished New Moon last night - that's 600+ pages in 4 work days. And now I'm DYING because I ordered it on Monday & stupid Amazon hasn't even shipped it yet - expected arrival date SEPTEMBER SIXTH. *freaks out*
I've been keeping myself busy today reading all the extra little stories she has on her website
http://stepheniemeyer.com - she's crazy obsessed with her characters & the story, and I think that's why the story is so likeable. (Be careful cruising around on the site - there are TONS of spoilers on the 2 earlier books.)
Admittedly, when I first started reading I was disappointed to find out that the main character is still in high school. And I was annoyed with all the eye rolls & snotty teen behavior, but I was able to ignore it all because of the story. Stephenie Meyer just tells the story so thoroughly, and with so much excitement, it makes it easy to become obsessed with the storyline. (And after spending several hours on her site, and seeing how obsessed she is with it, I relized why I was able to become so obsessed.)
It reminds me a lot of Buffy - that tension of a human & vampire love affair, the high school surroundings - and as a HUGE Buffy fan I really enjoyed this.
It also just knocked Harry Potter out of the #1 spot for Young Adults books. Oh yeah.
I also might just be totally vampire obsessed. I've had dreams since I was really really young about becoming a vampire. It was something I was never scared of - I just had this self-assurance that if I was ever bitten that I would be turned. Not that being chased down & bitten wouldn't be scary....
This might be my mother's fault. She always taught us dream control, where if something scary was happening you caused something to happen to make the scariness less scary. If you're falling, you grow wings or make yourself land on your feet like a cat. If you're being chased by a monster, you make a cage drop down from the ceiling & trap the monster. If you're drowning, you turn into a fish or dolphin. So I suppose my way of making a vampire attack less scary was by having them turn me instead of kill me. So I've always been obsessed with vampire books, movies, erotica...
I was trying to think of another book I read years ago that made a huge impression on me, but I honestly can't remember what it is... another YA book... I'm thinking it was about a teenage runaway... and the name of the book was the main vampires name... but I'm drawing a blank... OOOH! I think I just remembered the authors name! *goes to search* Yay, found it! Lost Souls by Poppy Z Brite! I read it in high school, so I probably just liked it because of all the sex, but yeah, there ya go.

AND MAKE MY BOOK GET HERE FASTER! OMG!
