New York Day 3

Dec 14, 2011 00:52

Breakfast, then we were off. We had a few things planned, one of which was to go to this bookstore that sells books by the foot. It was close to a subway stop, so we decided to add the Metro to our experiences. Pretty straight forward, as we needed to take Q, and Q seemed very uncomplicated.

When we got on, there was a digital map that showed all the others stops. Michelle jumped on the fact that one of the stops was the Aquarium. It was the second to the last stop, the last being Coney Island. So we got off the subway at the Aquarium stop, which was about 30-40 minutes, and we walked down to the beach:

Thank you random people for making this turn out to be an awesome shot!

And the most shocking thing of all, to me, was that it was warm there and not many people. Had to take off my coat!

Panoramic shots are hard when all the reference points look look the same!

Deno's Wonder Wheel Amusement Park. It was closed for the season, I guess.

So after that, and a little looking for shells, we went to the Aquarium, which was just a little ways away. It is hard to get good pictures of bright moving fish in low light situations, so here are the ones that turned out the best:

East coast, West coast, they all look the same:

After that, we went to get a small lunch. The place to stop at appeared to be Nathans. Very crowded inside. I just ordered some fries, but OMG they were the best fries I have had in a long time. If we didn't have plans for dinner, I would have gone back and ordered more and called it good lol.

Back to the subway, and off to get in line for tickets:

Mission accomplished, and we went off for dinner. The day before, we had asked about recommendations for pizza at the hotel and got a list and map of about 3 places. Well, we had lost the map and asked someone else that morning. We had one recommendation: John's Pizza. 1 didn't sound as good as 3 to choose from, but whatever. We wandered off in the general direction, figuring we would stop where ever looked good. There were pretty much pizza places everywhere. But I really didn't want to order from a place that displays them out to order that way, if that makes sense? I wanted an actual restaurant.

After feeling a bit lost, we turned a corner, and there was Johns. Woot. And the funny thing was, they had signs up saying No Slices. Haha.

So the restaurant was in an old church. It was 2 floors and HUGE. We had to wait about 20 minutes before we were lead up stairs with about 3 other small groups of people. The sound echoed off the walls and it was really noisy, but not the type that you can't hear yourself talk. The waiter took all of our orders (all the groups) without writing anything down. Impressive.

Pizza was good while it was hot, but cooled quickly. I need hot pizza ;) But the building alone was worth the trip. In the center, there was a domed ceiling of stained glass, and there were 4 stone pizza ovens, 2 on each floor, which explained why we got our food so quickly.

Then we went to the theater.

Now, I really knew nothing about Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. I had heard about the movie, but it had never seemed all that interesting to me. Drag queens just didn't seem all that interesting.

I stand corrected. Loved the show and I believe I have a fannish obsession to it.

The cast was amazing. The main guy's understudy was performing that night, Eric Sciotto, which was a bit of a disappointment, but he was amazing in the role!

What it is about: The main guy, Tick, gets a call from his wife urging him to meet his 6 year old son. She gets him to agree, and he has a few weeks to get there. I can't remember what the ultimatum was. But he talks his transvestite friend and another drag queen into making the trip with him, with a goal of performing 'for a friend' at a casino. The other two, who had never met before, bicker so bad for the whole trip.
Anyway, all the songs were ones I had heard before, and they went perfectly with the theme. The trio ran into many problems along the way.
At one point, they ran into the audience and pulled people on stage, danced with them, then left them alone dancing in a circle hahaha.
I believe somewhere it said there were over 500 costume changes during the whole play. I totally believe it.
Had a blast.

Bought a signed poster, which is going to cost more than I paid for it to get it framed.

After that, we went back to the hotel and kinda packed, and crashed.
