Coming Together

Alan and Robert sat in traffic on the way to the set. Alan yawned and scratched his head, closing his eyes. Next he felt a poke in his ribs, waking him up. He glared, trying to hold back a yawn that ended up escaping anyway. "Not me fault I didn't get enough sleep," he mumbled, stretching his arms up so his fingertips brushed the ceiling of the car.

"Oh, if I remember right, you had your own hand in....things," he finished lamely, not really sure how to explain their 'activities.'

"Two."

"What?"

"Two hands."

Robert groaned.

15 minutes later, Alan followed Robert onto the set, his eyes blinking quickly and trying to adjust to the lower light. Before he knew it, he was enveloped in a warm embrace and a light feminine fragrance. Alan returned the hug, mumbling into the dark hair that was trying to catch in his mouth, "Hello, Lisa."

"It is sooo good to see you again!" Lisa pulled back, a welcoming smile filling her face.

"I'm happy to receive such a wonderful welcome." He laughed when she grabbed his hand, only giving him a moment to wave goodbye to Robert, who was just heading off to the make-up trailer, before she pulled him over to the craft services table.

"How long will you be in town?" She sweetly smiled while grabbling a plate and handing it over to him.

Alan looked down at the table overflowing with baked goods and fruit. "A few weeks. We are heading back to New York for the holiday."

"Sounds fun."

"It would be if meeting his parents were not mixed into the visit. I would be lying if I did not say that Robert's extremely nervous."

"And you're Mr. Calm, Cool, and Collected?"

Alan blushed and looked down, taking a few moments to move fruit around his plate. "Honestly, I am worried. It could go really well or really pear shaped."

"You two are okay now?"

"Yes, yes... Robert's mom is less then joyful, and that stresses us both out."

"She will come around, won't she?"

Alan stopped and turned to look at Lisa. "Wishful thinking, I'm afraid."

"Happier topics then. It's nice to see you and we have a lot of catching up to do. “She squeezed his hand and smiled.”I know! How about you and Robert come over for dinner?"

"I will check with my better half, but I'm sure it we can find a day."

Lisa spotted someone behind Alan. "Oh, Kal, come here," she said, waving him over. "Kal, remember Alan?"

Kal looked at Alan and was confused. "No, not really." He squinted slightly, pondering, like that would help jog his memory. "No, sorry." He extended his hand to Alan. "Kal Penn."

Alan reached out and took his hand. "Must have missed each other last time. Me name's Alan Davies."

"Nice to meet you, Alan. How long have you been dating Lisa?"

Alan coughed and Lisa did a double take before laughing. "No, Alan is Robert's friend. They have been friends for a while. Hugh introduced them."

Alan had to hide a smile. He really appreciated the mother bear act from Lisa, even when it was unnecessary. "I live in London most of the year," he spoke up, "so I don't make it out here very often."

"That would explain the accent," Kal joked, and grabbed a blueberry muffin from the table. "Visiting long?"

"A month or so. I need to get back to work."

"What do you do?"

Lisa jumped in and answered, "He's an actor."

"I do this and that, radio and telly."

The activity on the set picked up, distracting and interrupting the conversation. Alan's face lit up when he saw Robert enter the sound stage.

Kal, who had been watching Alan, saw the change in expression and looked over in time to see Robert grinning back.

"Scene 3 act 4, actors to their places," a disembodied voice rang out and there was a flurry of activity as the scene was set up.

Robert and Alan hung back, standing side by side comfortably. Kal took his place and waited for the scene to begin. He looked back at the two men, not quite sure what to make of their relationship, or whatever it was. He stared past the camera and watched them standing close, almost touching, but maintaining a little distance. They were such a contrast, curly and straight, casually and formally dressed. They looked like opposites. Then Hugh made a joke, blowing the take, and they both laughed and Alan glanced sideways at Robert as Robert turned his body towards Alan. Fingers brushed and they moved their feet so they were touching at the toes as Robert leaned forward to whisper something that made the other grin. In that split second, Kal watched something tangible between them. It was a closeness that not many people had, but Kal felt a little pang, a desire to have a relationship that was that close. Kal doubt either knew what they were projecting, he was unsure himself. He stood and watched, wanting to see how much they would give away, when he was pulled from his observation by a shout:

"CUT!"

Kal shook his head and tried to figure out what he missed. He flashed a bright apologetic smile at the director.

"Glad to have you back with us, think you can make your cue this time?"

Kal blushed and nodded. "Yeah, tough dialogue, I was rehearsing it, sorry." He waved off the concern and glanced up. He noticed that Robert had taken a step back and Alan was leaning against the table now, their bodies a few feet apart. He did not know what moved them away from each other. Did they see him? Or was it the blown take? He looked back at Hugh and Jesse, who looked back with a contemplative stare and confusion, respectively. He closed his eyes, repeating his lines a few times, making sure that he would be ready to deliver. He angled away from Robert and Alan and tried to put them out of his mind, at least for now.

"ACTION!"

For now...
