Quite Interesting

Alan scratched his tummy and stretched, spreading himself over the whole of the bed. Robert had snuck out a few minutes ago, trying his best to be quiet. Alan heard the soft noises in the kitchen and listened for a few minutes. He needed to pee and couldn't wait till morning, so he stood and headed to the bathroom quickly before Robert returned, looking forward to curling up against a nice warm body when he was done. He was surprised to find the bed still empty when he walked out of the bathroom. He slipped on a pair of boxers and a t-shirt, then padded silently into the kitchen. He found Robert standing by the window, cookie and napkin in one hand, glass of water in the other, staring out at the full moon that was high in the sky. Alan walked into the kitchen, tapping lightly on the wall so Robert knew he was thee, and hopped up on the counter. "Couldn't sleep?"

"Just hungry." Robert glanced at Alan, popping the last bit of cookie in his mouth before looking out towards the moon again, his eyes fixed on the glowing orb.

Alan turned to look out the window trying to understand the significance, or the fascination.

Robert sipped from the water before leaving it on the counter and moving to stand between Alan's legs, wrapping his arms around Alan's waist. He began to speak quietly, the words slipping from around his tongue barely above a whisper:

"Not mine own fears, nor the prophetic soul
Of the wide world dreaming on things to come,
Can yet the lease of my true love control,
Supposed as forfeit to a confined doom."

Alan rested his chin on top of Robert's head. He loosely wrapped his arms across Robert's shoulders, leaning in to listen to what was being said, nearly holding his breath so he wouldn't disturb the moment.

"The mortal moon hath her eclipse endured,
And the sad augurs mock their own presage;
Incertainties now crown themselves assured,
And peace proclaims olives of endless age."

Robert grew a little more comfortable with the prose and his voice became louder and clearer. He kept his eye on the moon, watching it over Alan's shoulder. Happy memories of learning Shakespeare with friends seemed a lifetime ago, when the world seemed much less complicated.

"Now with the drops of this most balmy time,
My love looks fresh, and Death to me subscribes,
Since, spite of him, I'll live in this poor rhyme,
While he insults o'er dull and speechless tribes:
And thou in this shalt find thy monument,
When tyrants' crests and tombs of brass are spent. "

Alan kissed the top of Robert's head, giving him a little extra squeeze. "I have no bloody idea how you can remember that. Shakespeare?"

"Yes, Sonnet 120. The moon outside reminded me of it, the words just there, waiting. I have no idea how I do it, haven't heard it for a long time."

"How long?"

Robert stepped back and pulled Alan off the counter. He took Alan's hand, gripping it in his as Alan held him against his chest. "I guess about 15 years ago. I had memorized Puck's entire part for Dead Poet's and of course Claudio from Much Ado. Want to hear more?" He tried to hold back a yawn.

Alan laughed. "Maybe in the morning." He kissed Robert behind the ear. "Come on my bard, let's go back to bed."

Robert nodded, but didn't move, almost bonelessly lying back against Alan.

"Roooobert?" Alan whispered.

"Hmmm?"

"Oh no, you don't. Bed before I have to carry you." He nudged Robert forward until he started to walk.

Once in the bedroom, they stripped off their own clothes and crawled beneath the sheets.

They both settled, Robert set his glasses in a porcelain tray that had arrived somehow right next to his bed stand that day. He lay on his back for a few minutes, eyes adjusting to everything dark and now fuzzy in the room. He reached his hand out and took Alan's in his. "Sorry for waking you," he mumbled as he scooted close to curl around Alan.

"It was worth it," Alan replied as he was folded into Robert's embrace.
