Mac and Cheese “Hurry up,” Robert called over his shoulder, laughing as he put on a light jacket over his thick wool sweater.
“This is your fault,” Alan grumbled as he slowly made his way down the stairs.
“You are not possibly blaming me?”
“Yes, I am. Guilt obviously wasn’t going to work.”
“I am guilty of nothing. You were the one who got all excited.”
“I was following your lead. Or is that falling?”
Robert picked a wrong time to laugh and had to duck as a wool knit hat was thrown at his head.
Alan rolled his eyes and stopped in front of Robert, throwing a scarf around his neck, crisscrossing the ends, and pulling them tightly, giving Robert a wink.
Robert loosened the scarf as he opened the door and let Alan go limping out onto the porch. “This was your idea, we can stay in,” he offered.
Alan turned and looked at Robert, “No, I’m tough. I need to walk this off.”
Robert shook his head as he watched carefully Alan limp down the stairs and stop when he reached the dirt.
“Now I am the one waiting,” Alan said up to him.
“Well, at least you have your sense of humor,” Robert grumbled as he joined Alan and they started walking.
“Make a note: No more fooling around on stairs.”
“I did kiss it to make it better,” Robert pouted.
Alan pulled Robert close and kissed his temple. “Yes, you did, but it did put a damper on the night’s festivities.”
“All that matters is we spent it together.”
Alan choked dramatically on Robert’s comment. “Someone is sure sappy today.”
Ignoring Alan, Robert looked up at the bright sun and breathed deeply. The air was still cool, but it was beautiful outside, and he could smell the after-effects from the storm the night before. He slipped his hand into Alan’s and squeezed as they continued to walk. “It’s so quiet out here. You can hear yourself think.”
“And no one can hear your boyfriend scream in pain,” he winced as he stepped wrong.
“Alan, we can go back.”
“I am teasing you. You were a fine doctor, but next time I think we need a place without stairs.”
“They didn’t really help, did they?”
Alan laughed, that was an understatement. “I think after the shower, the hot cocoa, and the fire, I was too tired to walk and kiss at the same time.”
Robert stopped and looked at Alan deeply. “Yesterday was perfect. I need more days like that.”
Alan leaned forward and kissed the tip of Robert’s nose. “So, do I.”
They found a small hiking trail and walked--well Alan limped and Robert slowed his gait to keep pace with Alan--down the path, carefully avoiding puddles that hadn’t yet dried up, until they reached a small dock. Unlike the ground, it was dry, and they sat down, dangling their feet off the edge. Alan wrapped his arm around Robert and looked out at the dark blue water. He whispered, “I think I like the current company the best.”
Robert leaned back and Alan followed. They lay side by side on the old wooden dock, their fingers interlaced, staring at the clouds that floated by.
“Is that really good to leave the ankle….”
“Yes, Dr. Leonard, you are right.” Alan sat up and turned. Using Robert as a pillow for the back of his head, he propped his twisted ankle up on one of the supports.
Robert smiled. He really liked taking care of Alan and looking out for him. He closed his eyes, wishing that the cabin was theirs, just theirs. A place where they could meet up whenever they wanted to that would belong to both of them. But he also wished that there wasn’t the whole Atlantic Ocean between them, that House was over with, and that he didn’t have to worry about the mobs of fans and reporters. He sighed and threaded a hand into Alan’s tight curls, using his fingertips to give the injured man a scalp massage.
“Is this all in the treatment plan?” Alan teased.
“What? I was lost in thought.”
“Nothing important, just don’t stop. Your fingers feel wonderful.”
“The sun is welcome as well.”
They lay like that for several long minutes until Alan finally asked, “What are our plans today?”
Robert chuckled. “This is it. Did you have something else in mind?”
Alan turned his head towards Robert. “I was thinking, after we have our sandwiches, that we curl up on the couch and read, or maybe a nap?”
“Sounds good. I could almost fall asleep here.” He yawned as if to prove his point.
“Still cold out. I think it would be preferable to nap on a soft surface. With shelter,” Alan teased.
“Want to head back?”
“No, let’s stay for a bit. I like the service.” Alan smiled, loving to be difficult.
“If we are warm, I can extend this service.” He emphasized the point by moving his fingers down the top of Alan’s sweater and dipping them down to touch bare warm skin.
“That’s tempting, you tease.”
Robert slipped his hand further down the sweater, rubbing Alan’s shoulder and tracing a finger against his clavicle. He smiled when Alan shivered. “Anytime you want, just say the word.”
Alan just made a little pleasing sound in the back of his throat, and closed his eyes, focusing on the fingers and they way they played against his skin.
Robert let his fingers idly rub Alan’s skin as he turned his eyes up to the sky and turned his thoughts back to the future. He listened to the water lapping against the dock, a slight breeze whistling in the braches of the trees, and Alan’s breathing, slow and even. “Alan,” he whispered, realizing that Alan had fallen asleep and that his foot would start to go numb if kept propped up like that. “Alan, wake up.” He pulled his hand out of the sweater to gently shake his shoulder.
“You stopped,” Alan mumbled.
“We should head back where there are soft things to lay on. And pillows.”
“I got a bloody good pillow.”
“Well, I think I might be getting splinters in my scalp. Come on.”
Alan’s foot fell like a lead balloon onto the dock and he grimaced. He then felt the disappearance of his pillow and decided he best stand up. He opened his eyes and saw a strong hand reaching out to help him up. Alan allowed himself to be pulled vertical and was immediately wrapped in a warm embrace. He laid his head on Robert’s shoulder. “I didn’t realize I was so tired.”
“Sorry you didn’t sleep well.” Robert didn’t sleep too well either, hearing Alan’s soft sighs as he had tried to find a position that would keep his ankle from throbbing while trying not to disturb his partner. Finally, Robert had pulled Alan close and rested the injured foot over his own legs, rubbing his back until he fell asleep. Now he ran his hands down Alan’s back, wanting to prolong this quiet moment. “I’ll make lunch and then we can nap.”
Alan gave Robert a final squeeze and dropped his arms, turning to limp toward the cabin.
Robert watched him take a few steps forward before shouting out, “Race you!”
Alan laughed hard and stopped to lean against a tree. “You said that last night and look what happened.”
Robert stopped and turned around. His eyes were bright and he wore a broad smile. He took a few steps to Alan, pulling him close and giving him a quick laughing kiss. "Come on gimpy, I'll kiss it all better." They turned toward the cabin, hand in hand.
