First, belated happy new year!
It's been a while, again, but this time I've got kind of an excuse: I managed to slip and break my leg, needed surgery and was without internet for almost two weeks (no, really! :O). No need for pity though - but should you insist, pity me for my stupidity rather than for my pain.
Anyway, upon my return I wanted to present you a list of my favorite ten TV-shows in 2010. And well, that also won't work...
The reason is, I only want to include shows I've seen every (2010-) episode of. And while there are more than ten shows that fulfill that criteria, I simply can't put anything like Heroes, V, FlashForward or season5-Supernatural on a "Best of"-list and expect to be taken seriously ever again, right?!
Well, have a Top 5 instead...
*Shows that should/might have made it on the list but I haven't seen all the episodes yet: Friday Night Lights, Caprica.
*Honorable mentions: Bored to Death, Castle
#5. Chuck
While my excitement is far from how it was in seasons 1 and 2, I still enjoy the show a lot. And with episodes like the one where Steven died or Casey's couch lock, it shows that they it still got the awesomeness in it.
#4. Party Down
My favorite comedy since Arrested Devolepment. Great stories, great actors and just incredibly funny. Sad to see it gone but also thankful for 20 fine episodes on a very low budget.
#3. The Vampire Diaries
You shouldn't prejudge! I disliked that show and hoped it would fail before I had even seen a minute of it. A high-school girl between two vampire brothers? Good Lord! Then, I heard surprisingly good things about it, started to watch and... boy, was I wrong. It's well-written, fast-paced, has interesting characters and some truly shocking moments. And the season 1 finale is right up there with some of my all-time-favorites. But the biggest surprise turned out to be just how much they made me like Elena. She could have been one of the most boring characters ever, instead she is written as a girl who's brave, smart and shows initiative. And for once I can see why every character seems to think that a character is special.
#2. Lost
I guess most people would put this either on #1 or not on the list at all, depending on their feelings towards the finale. And to be honest, the
finale is the reason it didn't top the list. While, seen individually, it was a good, emotional episode and I didn't expect the one big answer to all the mysteries, I blame them for not even trying to answer any of them (I'm not talking about 'magical' stuff like the numbers or pointless minor things like the Hurley-bird here. I'm talking about some character-storylines like Ben/Widmore or even mysteries introduced in season 6 like Zombie-Sayid)
I also didn't like the explanation of the flash-sideways. Fortunately, that didn't spoil my enjoyment of them or season 6 as a whole. I just don't see them mainly as 'meet and greet in purgatory' but rather as a tale of what would have happened if Jacob hadn't interfered with their lives. And that's why I still think that Lost is one of the most fascinating stories in the history of television, even if it didn't top my list in 2010. :)
#1. Fringe
Two years ago, I watched this on a 'I have to'-feeling. It was Sci-Fi and JJ Abrams after all. But it was far from must-see-TV. Then it got a lot better at the end of season 1 and I had high(er) expectations for season 2. Which it failed to fulfill at first. Then came 2010, the second half of season 2 and the show just kept getting better and better, culminating in an awesome and very promising finale. Which led to expectations for season 3 that were even higher. And this time, it didn't disappoint. Far from it. There hasn't been one bad (or even not-so-good) episode in season 3 so far and some truly stellar ones. And the best thing: There is no all-important central mystery they might screw up or forget about once the show ends. Which, let's face it, it most likely will at the end of the season. Which is a shame, since imo it's the best show on TV right now, a show that everyone who's remotely interested in Sci-Fi should watch.
