Eastercon vs Media Cons - Lets have this discussion here rather than on FB please

Open post to Liam regarding the conversation developing on the other page:

The reason I will be going to a Media con  is:

- I don't like interactive panel cons (which is how I have had Eastercon described in the past rightly or wrongly).

- I prefer guest focused cons.  So does hubby and that's what we do.

- We like party cons with themed parties etc.  The format of these cons does suit us.  No reason to change what isn't broken.

- We go to this con  in particular because its is our local and because of the friend groups who also go.  Yes, its nice to spend time with other friends such as ZZ9ers but when a weekend convention costs over £500 to attend you have to prioritize where our money goes.  For value for money i get more memories out of a Media and party con than a "panel" con which is how Eastercon comes across on the website and from anything I have ever been told about it.

- This convention does charge for autographs but the money goes only to the guest themselves in most cases.  Guess what - you don't have to buy them!  I don't.

- I do know that this event runs on a small budge compared to LFCC and some of other Media based cons.  What they produce on that budget is great and makes for a better convention most times.

- The con gives to the Teenage Cancer Trust.  May not be your particular choice of charity but its the only con I have heard of where the proceeds do go to charity.

- TV based cons are fun and light-hearted.

- The atmosphere at the con is great, just how I like it.  Yes, it has its bad points but for me they are way outweighed by the good points.  Everyone to their own.

Edited to include this point: - I know with SF Ball they may use a limited company for the convention (mentioned in the deleted Facebook comments) but that is for legal purposes to reduce personal liabilities.

Other points about this Eastercon particularly:

- None of the guests are people who have any interest to me at all.  I don't read those authors. Hubby does but he doesn't care about book related cons at all and I am not sure I could be bothered either.

- Due to the location and hotel you are using (which is one of my most unfavoured hotels and I even hate going to a media-based con there) we would probably have to come up the night before things start.  Due to the length of the con that's £600 in costs alone for hotels and reg.  That's more than we can afford.

- The themes this year do not interest me. Sorry. They sound so heavy handed.

If these links seem to upset you then I could try to block you from them.  Unfortunately Facebook's filters are crap and don't always work so I can't and you'd see it anyway. Most of the other people I speak to on Facebook I met through Media Cons.  I know quite a few people on FB who would want to see these guests and we do all keep each other up to date on whose been announced at what event.

If we had enough money perhaps we would try a Eastercon in the future. At the moment I do doubt it.  In the future... who knows.
