Local tourism: San Jose History Park

May 27, 2013 22:54

I took EM Jr to the San Jose History Park Sunday afternoon. What can I say? It was free. EM Jr loved the trolley car and the trolley museum, with its miniature trolley out front (with wheels! and bells!). There were small museums celebrating Greek-Americans and Portuguese-Americans. The old-tymey buildings (some open to the public, some closed) were beautiful, and it's great that they are all being preserved in one place. This is the kind of place that would be great for busloads of school children, with guides to put all the sights in context.

Trolley - travels from one end of the park to the other. The children were allowed to ring the bell before it starts up

Chinese-American public building - love the colors!

Gas station, with a "Mater"-like car parked inside

Stables

Train - the plaque in front hopefully notes that a railroad museum has been proposed for Downtown San Jose. That would be awesome!

Fire house - I especially loved the frieze above the gates, with its fire equipment motifs: artistically curled hose, axes, fire hats, nozzles, &c

Hotel, serving as a museum (currently showing an uninspiring exhibit on water) with candy / ice cream shop inside. The gift shop was closed.

The light tower - a fixture of nighttime San Jose in the early 20th century, lit up like a Christmas tree all year long. How cool!
