The knife was slick in Buffy’s hands. She thought she’d be done before Dawn came home, but Tara’d fought back, a lot harder than Buffy had expected. Of course, she’d been fighting for her life. Buffy remembered how that felt. Maybe.

Oh crap this is truly DARK. You've combined two of my favorite "genres": AU versions of the Gift, and AU Bargaining/Buffy came back REALLY wrong; in a way I've never seen anyone else do.

And two clever misleads - my first assumption was that this was about Buffy being paralyzed by the fall, esp thanks to the section where she's watching birds fly; and then that she was literally a vampire (her incisors itched - great imagery.)
