Suuuuure, there's no difference between men and women's health care....

Mar 27, 2012 08:21

Did you know we didn't know what the clitoris looked like until 2009?"

...why am I not surprised? I was shocked when cornerofmadness told me that there had been no studies of women's heart attack symptoms - which differ from men's - until semi-recently (the past fifteen years, CoM? I can't remember).

But no, we're not second class citizens. Nope.

This sort of thing makes me want to scream and bang my head against a wall.

But then I'm a hysterical feminazi, so go fig.

My niece was upset with me because I posted that I was for the change to the health insurance laws to cover birth control because, "If I was unable to afford birth control, I didn't have sex" and everyone(woman) should do that.

I was literally so shocked, all I could say was, "Well, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one."

My friend x_expat was much better at explaining why the provision was a GOOD thing, and I followed it up with, "...and I'm on BC because of my health - as are a numerous amount of my celibate friends". Niece never answered, sadly.

Damn fuckin' straight. I first went on hormonal BC at 18 because I have endometriosis. It's not at all my preferred BC method- I went off it a year later (once I got a prescription for serious painkillers to use), and then back on in my early 20s because I had problems with cysts (for which I had to have surgery, in fact). And when I got married at 21, I no longer had insurance. I stayed on the BC for years because I was terrified I'd have to have another surgery if I didn't, and thank god for Planned Parenthood because it's the only way I could afford it.

I got into a debate with a friend's father about this because he was arguing that BC coverage would lead to more abortions. To which my only possible answer was "You don't give a shit about life, asshole, you just care about controlling what women do."

So, you're another one who needed it for health related reasons. I also made a post about how I can't afford mammograms and the local Planned Parenthood/Various other groups of the same ilk help us who can't afford them by hosting various events throughout the year - Susan B. Komen being a part of that.

Since I've had cancer twice in the past (minor, very minor, but still), I want my mammograms - especially since my breast type is prone to cancer. :\

the study issues have less to do with class than difficulty in studying women. The hormonal interplay make studying them very difficult and clear cut answers harder to get. Things that go for men generally apply to females. But by the same token the hormonal interplay needs to be addressed

But didn't you also tell me that no research had been done until semi-recently? Or am I confusing that with something else?

I seem to recall there was a study once of the difference in the amount of research money devoted to what were considered 'women's health issues' vs. the amount given to men's health issues. It wasn't even close - like women's issues got something like 1/100th of the funding men's health issues got.

Downright sickening.

Well, you know...

yeah i think you are.

also this article doesn't stand up to fact checking. there were studies of 3-D structure dating back at least 3 years prior done by men in London and that's because the technology didn't exist until then.

that said women are poorly studied for things that are not directly related to reproduction

eta - it was cardio you're thinking of and a study just came out showing that red wine DOES in fact help women (they thought it wouldn't) and helps to lose weight (one small glass, too bad it's red...)

It's good to know I hadn't completely lost my mind. Well, at least not over that.

Disappointed about fact checking - that would've been nice.

yes if you're going to write an obviously inflammatory article I shouldn't be able to prove you wrong in the space of time it takes to type 3-d visualization of clitoris in a search engine.

but it is very recent. then again so is the limbic system research

I just shared that link on Tumblr. I want to say I'm not surprised because MEN RULE THE WORLD (so they think) but...god. I'm going to go add a concussion and gashes on my head to the migraine.
