Bees, weird cornfields, and a protagonist who was a witness to a mysterious kidnapping--or was it?

I am guessing this writer watched The X-Files, esp. "Fight the Future," at a critical developmental juncture... I will take a look at this book when I am done with "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered."
