"I loved you," he said in a whisper and I looked back at him over my shoulder. Frowning, because here I was, getting married in two days and he showed up unexpected-like practically on my doorstep. Okay, not my doorstep, where I work, and still. I didn't need this kind of stress. I already had another man who loved me - present tense - and I wasn't going to get pulled back into this man's stupid head games.
I straightened my back, threw back my hair, folded my arms. I studied him, the man whom I'd loved with all my heart, desperately, ferociously. Noticed how crow's feet framed his eyes, how lines bracketed his mouth. Grey strands sprinkled through his hair. He'd been my teacher, my mentor, my lover, my disease, and I'd finally accepted the cure for him.
"I loved you, too," I said, tilting my chin up higher to meet his eyes. "But I don't any more."
