War of Lindsay's Birthday

Jul 07, 2005 03:40

I just got in from Lindsay's welcome back/birthday get together. Boy did she give me a look on my way out. I didn't want to be the first one to leave but it got to the point where I just had to. I don't know what exactly it was be it depression, unease or just plain tiredness but had I stayed any longer I would have ended up staring blankly and not saying anything. I caught myself like that a few times during Apples to Apples but I don't think anyone noticed. Now I'm home and not much better but at least I'm not in the way. Hopefully Lindsay won't be as mad once she gets part II of her B-day gift.

Apples was fun this time, and not just because I won by a landslide. Almost everyone got involved and made a good time of it. Normally I get one, maybe two cards in a game but either I had a good feel for the judges tonite (no jokes) or I sold my cards well. Tom seemed easy to persuade but perhaps he just has a similar sense of humor. Of course, all this means I'll probably never win again but it's one of those games where you don't play to win. All the fun is what you put into it. And speaking of, I still need to get a deck of blank cards so we all can have our own "Lindsay" card.

Had a full weekend but there was too much to chronicle tonite. A small inkling of can be found in my long, detailed and extremely biased review of the new big-budget War of the Worlds film.

I really need to get to the pet store and soon to get some new plants and ghost shrimp for my aquarium. It's a special trip because I have to go straight back from there to get everything into the tank before it can die. I've been meaning to go for the past week but I've also been sleeping in a lot. Part of it is needing actual sleep since my current bedtime is near four o'clock, but another is that going there is stressful and depressing. Thea and I went there a lot for supplies for her tanks and then later, mine. The main reason I got my aquarium is that it was something we could maintain and enjoy together and now that she wants little to do with me it just remains as a solid remainder of something I've lost. I don't really have any interest in stocking the tank any further so the three fish there have got it made. I'll keep taking care of them until I find another home or they pass away. Until then I must bear trips to the pet store and regular cleanings. I won't subject them to my own miseries.

Summerfest is still going on. Does anyone want to go with me this Saturday? I won't go alone because I would just end up lost, wandering around in the crowd wondering what to do with myself. But it's still a blast and events like this are better shared anyway. Need more incentive? It's held beneath an interstate overpass that looks like suspiciously like the one that's destroyed in the beginning of the new War of the Worlds movie, expensive version.

I received a tentative flight itinerary for my trip to Japan. Pop Japan Travel sent me a list of connecting flights that will get me to LAX and back in conjunction with their flights out to Japan. I'd leave MSN for Chicago to LA to Japan and on the way back to LA, then Dallas and finally MSN again. It's at least 18 hours of air time either way and each in a single day. Not to mention another 500 odd dollars added to expenditures bringing the bare essential cost for this trip up to three grand. I can manage it but it's still a little daunting considering my last vacation cost less than one.

In other news, I received my copy of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds ULLAdubULLA: The Remix Album. It was unavailable when I began my search but I left a request with Amazon.com with the product condition I found acceptable and price I was willing to pay. As soon as it was available BAM! It was mine. I enjoy everything I've herd but I've only skipped around so far. This doesn't seem like the sort of album you'd listen straight through beginning to end. There are a lot of multiple remixes of the same songs (there are eight of The Eve of the War) but the music itself is so good that I won't get tired of them. Let's see how many versions of this album I have now.
  1. The original 2LP vinyl gatefold album. My first acquisition
  2. The CD version of the above, purchased a few months later
  3. techno remix tracks of selections for the PS1 and PC versions of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds games.
  4. ULLAdubULLA remixes, mentioned above
  5. And the new must-have:
  6. The collectors' edition re-release featuring seven discs, a book, a DVD and a slew of other things I'm more than willing to pay eighty pounds for.
I only hope they're still available when I have money enough to order. I'm most excited about the complete Richard Burton performance, of which only 40% was used on the final version of the album. If this keeps up my annual WotW kick is going to start off early this year and I won't be able to wait until October to do my commemorative radio broadcast thing.

It's late. I need sleep, and strength if I'm going to make it to the pet store and back before work tomorrow.
