Takeru walked through the door to the apartment and closed it behind him. Another day of school, another day of boredom, that’s all he’d dealt with since he had returned from the US. It was the same things every day, come home, do homework, do something else and have dinner with Kaasan. As much as he enjoyed cooking, since the break-up, he hadn’t felt like doing much other than sit in front of the computer or the TV after finishing homework. In fact, he’d been skipping dinner some nights altogether, just eating something small and retreating to his room for quality alone time.
He figured Kaasan accounted it to school. Oh how wrong our blonde hero was.
As he entered the door he noticed that his Kaasan was sitting at the table, her hands folded. “Takeru…sit down please.”
Takeru froze on the spot and set his stuff down. He walked to the table and sat down across from his mother, who looked anything but pleased. Peanut sat at his feet and whimpered, so Takeru patted him on the head.
“Takeru I know about you and Catherine.” Natsuko quietly said, looking to her son.
Takeru felt his heart plunge into his stomach as chills ran up and down his spine, “What are you talking about Kaasan?”
“You and Catherine, you both broke up. Don’t try to deny it. You got away with the break-ups with Hikari-chan and Yuki-san, but you’re not getting away this time.” His mother plainly replied, sighing and rubbing her temples.
“I didn’t…” Takeru started.
“Takeru do not argue with me on this. You picked the right weeks was all. Now that I’ve been promoted to Editor-In-Chief, there’s no getting away with it anymore. Now, talk to me Takeru. You haven’t truly looked me in face and opened up to me since Tony…” Her brown eyes soften and looked to Takeru, who seemed uncomfortable as he gazed into dead space.
Tony…there was a name he had not heard in almost six months. One he had honestly wanted to forget, but could not. He would not let it show, no, Takeru had an image to keep up and keeping it up was what he was going to do. “There’s been nothing to talk about Kaasan. If there was, I would talk to you.”
“Takeru, you are one of the worst liars I know when you talk to me. I bet you can fool all your friends, but you can not fool me. Talk to me, it’s why I am here.” Natsuko replied, getting up from her chair and sitting next to Takeru, “What’s bothering you dear?”
“Nothing Kaasan. Honest.” Takeru replied, scooting his chair away from her slightly.
This entire conversation upset Takeru. He did not want to talk about anything with anyone. He could not. He needed to stand on his own two feet and stop seeking comfort from those around him. He tried to do this with Tony as well…and it still worked to this day, somewhat. He had stuffed the entire situation to deepest corners of his memory and left it there to rot. Unpacking that box now was not going to help him. He sighed on the inside and bent over to pet Peanut, who had laid himself at Takeru’s feet.
“Takeru…” Natsuko pulled her son in for a hug, which he resisted at first, but gave in for fear of reprimand.
“I’m sorry. I’ve failed you as a mother to a certain extent, haven’t I? I was not there…” She stopped and released the blonde haired Chosen.
“Kaasan, it’s OK, I had friends those times. Those times, people were there for me. Because I went to them. This time, I have no need to go to anyone. I’m OK, I promise.” Takeru explained to his mother.
Takeru you are liar. You need help more than you’ll ever admit. You want to stand on your own two feet you do it. But damnit, who could he go to for help anyway? No one cared. Only Catherine did and Yamato and Ken. But none of his “friends” did. No one called when he never made contact through LJ. No one called or came to visit when they knew he and Catherine had broken up. In fact, he bet one or two of them were laughing and telling themselves they knew it wouldn’t work.
Natsuko looked to her son and felt proud. Even though he could try and talk about how he felt, he faced his demons and kept going. However, she also knew that he had he breaking point and had reached it once in August…and she was not sure how close he was to breaking again. If he did…she would be there for him. As would…Yamato. For now, she just needed to get him to talk.
“I doubt it. Start by telling me about your friends. What are they up to, what about Hik..Hikari-chan?” She asked, not acknowledging her stuttering.
“I don’t know. She hasn’t talked to me lately. Neither has Daisuke…or Iori…or Miyako. Or anyone for that matter, other than Yamato, Catherine and Ken. It seems like no one cares Kaasan. When I broke up with Yuki…nobody knew we were together, but as soon as I posted, Ken and Hikari were there and shook me out of the my slump. Now…everyone’s so busy with themselves…Kaa-san, they didn’t even try to contact me while I was in the US. Not once did anyone other than Catherine leave a voice message or text message. No one worried about me. I’m slowly starting to think that they do not care anymore. They’re too busy breaking up and hooking up and worrying about themselves, that no one worries about anyone else anymore. I’ve fallen out of touch with everyone other than Yamato and Ken. It’s not fair. Everyone just keeps pushing me away…” Takeru trailed off.
Natsuko looked to her son and smiled softly, “Oh Takeru…that’s life. No group of people can stay friends forever. At one point, you find those that you really want to stay in contact with and the rest just drift away. It happened to me as well, in high school…but let’s not talk about me. It’s alright to fall out of contact sometimes, it may even be necessary to evolve and grow.”
Takeru just numbly nodded and listened to his mother. He couldn’t believe that he had just told his mother…that. At least…
“Is it also OK to be mad at them? Those who seem to not care?” Takeru asked quietly, pulling back into himself.
Natsuko bit her bottom lip, “I’m willing to go out on a limb and say no, but at some, I think it’s OK.”
Takeru looked down to the table and didn’t say anything. Names flashed through his head, but none crossed his tongue. He just stared at that spot on the table… He had tried. Numerous times in fact, to get the Chosen all together for good quality time, but things were never the way they used to be. It was not fair. But the truth.
“Ah, OK…then…yeah.” Takeru got up from the table and slipped into his room. He shut the door and did not open it until his mother called for dinner later that evening.
