So I learned (or maybe realized) today, that hipsters:
- wear skinny jeans, vintage/secondhand clothes, bright, childish jewelry, coats with lots of buttons, expensive local designer/Saturday market clothes
- like obscure bands and subgenres, especiallyart rock and local/foreign/classical music
- study foreign languages (usually French and Russian)
- watch art-house movies, enjoy going to non-commercial cinema and discussing/critiquing the films afterward
- write poetry and then perform it
- are into art museums, performance art, theatre, etc.
- are versed in 'classic' literature, especially books no one else enjoys reading because they're 'too dense' or 'boring', e.g. Dostoevsky
- often play one or more musical instrument, but not in their school's marching band/orchestra
- enjoy C-SPAN, parliamentary debates, NPR, cable-access channels
SHOULD I BE HORRIFIED THAT I'VE UNINTENTIONALLY BEEN A PRETENTIOUS ASSHOLE FOR YEARS, OR THRILLED THAT SOMEONE ELSE SHARES MY INTERESTS? HELP ME.
