I'm taking two classes with a young girl whose life ambition is to be a cop; and it's frightening watching her "evolve".
She expressed genuine anger and confusion today when our (addressing the class as a whole) asked if everyone always agreed with one side in an argument, or if we all saw the value in scrutinizing opinions on all sides.
The girl roleplays prostitutes for the police academy, to test cadets-in-training. When our teacher asked her if she believed in the legalization of prostitution she replied "Of course not. It's against the law", cleary missing out in the irony that if it was legal (the basis upon which her morality is constructed) then she'd reply the same way if asked the question's bizarro counterpart. Weird.
I posed that legalizing prostitution (as in Nevada) eliminates pimps and madams, ensures customers a disease-free experience, and gives the women employed health benefits, legal benefits, a steady income, and a safe environment (in which police may respond to distress, without reprimanding the victim, as well), in which to perform.
She looked at me like I advocated fucking children with egg-beaters. For a good ten seconds, I felt like the worst person alive. Again: weird.
I hate cops. I hate the law. I hate money.
