So, I have entered in to the ever expensive hobby of cameras. I've picked up a Nikon D40 starter kit that includes the 18-55mm lens, a camera bag and some memory cards (SD). The expensive part is beyond the camera and lens, because of all the different and fun looking toys you can get for such equipment. At a surface glance, I could get:

I am coming from a background of SLR cameras, and I do want to get a DSLR soon.
Anyways, what I would suggest to start with would be two lenses and a body. I would suggest a medium range one, about 55mm or so, and then one other, a nice telephoto zoom.
I don't think that you are going to need a lot of filters at first. I would very highly reccomend at least a polarizing filter, it helps with glare and uneven light conditions.
You REALLY want to invest is a good, well padded camera bag. It is the best investment you can make. You want a comfortable shoulder strap, and a bag big enough to carry you stuff, but not so big that it is unwieldly.
A tripod is a great investment as well. Take a little extra money and don't go for a cheap model. Make sure it is a level indicator, like construction workers use. It will REALLY help taking good pics.
I do agree with Dobie that you will take a lot of bad pics for every god one. When I took regular film shots with my SLR, I got maybe 2 shots off of one roll of 36 film.
