We had a robin's nest on our fence.  Mama bird put it up, and started laying around Easter.  She had four pretty blue eggs in it, and even though it bordered two yards with dogs, she seemed safe.  The cats didn't seem to bother her, and she was there every morning and every night ( Read more... )

Your irritation at the kids has been bugging me for a while. Certainly they did a horrible thing, but do they even understand that? I think you are letting your angry cloud your judgment.

See, I think kids being destructive is just a way for them to express their curiosity. Humans learn by observing how objects react to stimulus. In the case of a child, who has no knowledge to make them cautious, they may have just been trying to learn more about what a birds nest is. After all, you only found 1 broken egg. That means they tried to be careful. As for the one with the hole? If you didn't know better, wouldn't 'Poke it with a stick' seem like a good way to make the baby bird come out?

The study of medicine used to be the same way. The only way we seemed to be able to figure out how things work was by breaking them and observing.

I think you should talk to the parents. Don't be angry, be responsible. It's their responsibility to teach their children, and ours to be willing to help them. Sure it was horrible to destroy the nest, but with the right response I don't think it will happen again.
