More of We All Fall Down. This is a short chapter leading up to the something surprising.
She should have grabbed her gun. She had the element of surprise supporting her. She could have stopped him from even entering his own apartment. She could have continued with the phone call to her office and let whomever answered know that she was at his apartment. Jack would have been notified and headed over there quickly. But instead of doing those wise things she threw the dialing phone into her pocketbook and ran back into the bathroom.
The door creaked open just as she closed the bathroom door. The sound was masked by the shower pouring down buckets of water while no one stood under it. Her heart was thumping in her chest and her mind was whirling with what to do. If Jack was concerned then there is something definitely wrong here, she thought. The bathroom was windowless, there was no escape so she did the one thing she could do: take a shower. She had to play it safe and act like nothing was wrong. And then she could leave, head out the door and into the street where strangely enough it was safe.
Samantha didn’t stay long in the shower just gave enough time to give the appearance that she cleaned up. The water was piping hot but she felt goose bumps prickle on her skin.
She dressed in the tight outfit of sweats and tee shirt that belong to Emily Dugan, Josh’s sister and headed out, hair still dripping, into the living room.
Josh was reading the morning newspaper, a fresh cup of coffee in one hand. He grinned when he saw her. “Yeah they are a little tight on you.”
“Yeah, I should be getting home and putting fresh clothes on. I’m already late for work.”
“Okay,” he said, “thanks again for staying.” He smiled.
“There wasn’t any place I needed to be.”
“Oh, Sam. You’re purse was talking a few minutes ago.” He said if just recalling the information.
Her heart seemed to stop. “What?”
“Yeah some noise coming out of it.”
If she was expecting some sort of resistance to her leaving or some behavior indicating that he was curious about the nosie in the purse, he didn’t exhibit any. He merely sat and looked at the sports section.
“I’ll see you later,” she lied and went to grab her purse but her hands were still moist from the shower and the purse fell in slow motion to the floor. The contents laid about. The cell phone’s sound was no longer mumbled. Danny’s voice could be heard “Sam? Sam we got the call pinpointed. We know you’re at that crazy Dugan’s place. Can you hear me? Hold on.”
Samantha’s eyes looked at Josh’s who looked straight at her. In a swift movement she had grabbed her gun off the table. Before he had fully risen from the sofa she had the safety off. And then when he said her name she put the gun barrel to his chest.
