questions!

I just joined LJ yesterday, and i have some questions. I made some sample icons on microsoft word. (Yea, you thought it was bad that you making icons on Paint was bad. lol) So I went to manage icons, choose from file, and all that stuff. When i clicked "proceed", the page just said edit userpics. It was the kind of screen that would say error or success. Could you show me a better way to upload? And also, I know there's a way to change your mood smileys, so how do you do that?
