In his book, "Social Intelligence", published 10 years after his groundbreaking book "Emotional Intelligence - redefining what it means to be smart" (1996), Goleman argues for compassion and empathy as a measure of social intelligence, based on new findings from neuro-sociology.
While EQ measures how well one is self aware of one's emotions and ability to manage them, Social Intelligence goes a step further to define how one manages one's relationships and the extent that one is aware of others' emotions and ability to manage them.
Goleman argues that mankind is "wired to connect", mirror neurons in our brains firing in response to others' pleasure, sadness or anguish. Tapping on this instinctive empathic capacity is vital to our mankind's survival, from a nursing mother looking after her baby, to the prevention of WMD potentially obliterating mankind from the surface of the earth.
Social intelligence when applied to various fields such as healthcare, active aging, education/schools, prison environments, parenting, will help create a "secure base" (secure emotional environment) for mutual healing and social support to occur, leading to better health, learning and happiness.
Yes. I'm sold on his idea :)
