The Grey Zone

Well, I'm still sick, but I'm getting better...this morning i woke up, not wanting to work on my English essay just yet, and in the mood for a really good movie, so i turned on HBO...for the next two hours i watched one of the best films i have ever seen...THE GREY ZONE. If you havent seen it, i HIGHLY recommend you do, because it is truly brilliant. It's written and directed after the play THE GREY ZONE, both of which were written by Tim Blake Nelson. It takes place during the FINAL SOLUTION of the holocaust, which, if you do not know, was the final couple of years of the holocaust...the worst years. More specifically, it takes place in, what was the WORST death camp of them all, Auschwitz/Birkenau, which was located in Poland (if you do not know, though i HOPE that you all know this already). In a nutshell here is the plot...though, DONT judge the movie on this plot, there is SOOO much more to this film, you have NO idea...A Nazi doctor (Miklos Nyiszli: wrote a book that was his sort of "eye-witness" account of what he went on at Auschwitz and what he had to do), along with the Sonderkomando, Jews who are forced to work in the crematoria of Auschwitz against their fellow Jews, find themselves in a moral grey zone. Honestly though, it really is THE STORY YOU HAVEN'T SEEN...although I personally, and many have heard the stories, it really throws you FRONT ROW CENTER, into the horrible INTERWORKINGS of Auschwitz...a closer look into what the Jews had to deal with. This movie is one of the most graphic holocaust films that I have seen...you really see EVERYTHING that you would NEVER want to, FULL ON. The cast really impressed me, because when i saw who was in it, I was questioning the casting, but honestly, truly amazing performances for all of the actors and actresses...some of the best were David Arquette (no judging now, see it before you judge his performance), David Chandler, Allan Corduner, Harvey Keitel, Mira Sorvino, Lisa Benavides, Daniel Benzali, Michael Stuhlbarg, George Zlatarev, Velizar Binev, Dimitar Ivanov, Kamelia Grigorova (really moving performance, though she doesnt even say one word), and many others...wohh, haha, didnt realize i was giving like the whole cast, but honestly, they all do an AMAZING JOB! And one of the most suprising performances was definitely David Arquette's...you'll really be blown away. Some other facts that i learned about the film that were both frightening and at the same time a bit WRONG and just so dedicated were...The actual plans for the original Auschwitz death camp were used to build the set for this film...The set was constructed near Sofia, Bulgaria for the shooting of the film...And this one really blew me away...A 90% scale reproduction of the Auschwitz/Birkenau dath camp was constructed for the film...They actually built an entire camp, almost EXACT replica of Auschwitz...that both freaked me out and bothered me because I dont think that that should EVER be done, but honestly...it gives such an effect...I'm not gonna lie, this film is EXTREMELY intense...it shows the sickening truths behind the NEED TO SURVIVE that many of the Jews had...you see it take over the lives of these characters to the point of INSANITY and its violently true. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM SHINDLER'S LIST (not as good) AND THE PIANIST, but its definitely up there...the ending is completely different too, i wont tell waht happens, but there is a poem that the little girl reads at the end that is EXTREMELY powerful and creates a different effect that is haunting...
Wohh, haha, ok, ranting much? Alright, i gg, but definitely see this film...its SOOO good! Much love, <3
