Kennedy remembers back to when she was five.
She remembers her and her dad moving house a lot. Her mum had left her dad and her alone, when Kennedy was only three years old. Her dad used to always ask her if she wanted to help decorate the new house. She always said no and left the room. She didn’t see the point in helping to decorate a house that they would only live in for a few months.
Instead, Kennedy spent a lot of time out in the garden. Every time that she moved into a new house, she always went into the garden. She liked to make little dens there, places where she could think about things.
There were a lot of things in the world that Kennedy didn’t understand at five. She had always wondered why they moved around so much, but whenever she asked her dad, he always made up some kind of excuse. She was only five, but she still knew when somebody was lying to her.
Kennedy used to sit in the den and look at the house. She wondered why they had to keep moving all the time. When Kennedy and her dad first moved house, Kennedy found it brilliant but now the novelty had worn off and she was just bored. She wanted somewhere to stay permanently.
Her dad used to buy her things to make up for it, things like hairclips and girly make up sets. Kennedy used to take the hairclips and make up and then she would put them on her dolls. Then she would run down to her dad and show him. Her dad would protest that he brought them for her, not for her dolls. This confused Kennedy. This was also one of the things that she would contemplate while sitting in her den in the garden. She didn’t see why so many people wanted to change themselves. She was confused about why she got brought make up and pretty things and nobody brought her dad anything.
One evening, when they were watching the television, she decided to ask him,
“Daddy, why do you give me make up?”, she asked him
Her dad stopped watching the TV and looked at her with a confused look on his face
“Make up, you know all the powdery stuff, that’s all different colours”, Kennedy repeated
“Well, because it will make you look even more gorgeous”, said her dad
“Why have I got to look gorgeous?”, asked Kennedy, looking at her father with confusion
“ I don’t know. But lots of girls like you wear it, to look pretty”, her father answered
“I don’t think I want to look pretty, I think I’m going to join the army when I’m older”, said Kennedy
“The army, well sometimes even people in the army want to look nice”, said her dad, laughing
“Daddy, now you’re just being silly. I don’t think people in the army can look very pretty with mud all over their faces”, said Kennedy
“No, I don’t think they can. At least my little Kennedy is naturally beautiful”, said her dad, gesturing for her to go and hug him
Kennedy hugged her dad, he smelled like lynx and washing up liquid. Then Kennedy sat next to him on the sofa.
“So, you don’t want me to get you make up anymore as a gift?”, her dad asked
“Nope”, replied Kennedy
“What would you like me to get you instead?”, asked her dad
“A white pony”, Kennedy replied
Kennedy’s dad laughed softly and placed his arm around her.
