Identity Crisis

I've been out of the comics game and long, long time. Other than pick up the occasional collected trades for stuff that interests me (The Ultimates, 1602, etc.) I don't even glance at comic shelves.

Except when I can't avoid it, like at the Florissant Fantasy shop (my least favorite FS and, unfortunately, now my closest one. Maplewood, circa 2 years ago when I knew everyone there, was so much better). I couldn't help but see all the "Crisis" related DC stuff. Having a moment to spare, I asked the clerk (the nice one, not the annoying one)what all the hub-bub was about. Those familiar with these settings know just how dangerous a question this is to ask someone you're not familiar with...you could be in for an hour of detailed history when all you wanted was a short review and some Cliffnotes.

Fortunately, Nice Clerk gave me what I wanted to hear. More than that, he actually gave me his copy of a comic "Countdown to Infinite Crisis" claiming it would be the best comic I'd ever read.

Yeah. Right. Right?

So it turns out he was pretty much right. One of the best comics I have ever read...and I don't know diddly about the DC Universe beyond the basics. I was always a Marvel fan. I've sinced purchased the other TPBs that tie into the storyline, including the critically acclaimed "Identity Crisis."

Now I see what the hub-bub was about. Identity Crisis was stellar in every way. Also, it contains the best panel I've ever seen in comics. Near the end, there's a panel with Superman (in his down-on-the-farm overalls) standing with Ma Kent in a cornfield. You can tell that recent events are weighing heavy on him by his posture. Ma Kent holds his hand and says "It's okay to be bothered by it, Clark." Best. Panel. Evar.

That's my comic rant for now. Still reading the "Countdown" stuff. Don't imagine I'll get to read Infinite Crisis itself until it comes out as a TPB in August.
